Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for an Emergency Department position at a Level 1 Trauma Academic Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC, requiring a minimum of 2 years of ED experience and night shift availability.
Details
- Large academic medical center with 885 licensed beds, Level 1 Trauma designation, and specialized centers including Chest Pain, Burn, and Stroke
- Emergency Department features 55 horizontal beds, 6 vertical beds, 15 observation beds, and 5 behavioral health holding beds, with an average daily census of 200–220 patients
- High-acuity patient population including ESI levels 1–5, trauma (GSWs, stabbings, MVCs, multi-trauma), stroke, STEMI, burns, cardiac and respiratory arrest, conscious sedations, overdoses, and behavioral health presentations
- Specialized procedures include defibrillation, vent management, cardiac pacing, and sexual assault response
- RN-to-patient ratios range from 3:1 to 6:1 depending on clinical area and patient acuity
- EMR: Epic (experience required)
- Equipment includes Alaris IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, Philips monitors, GE point-of-care ultrasounds, and GE EKG machines
- 12-hour night shifts, 1930–0730, 36 hours per week
- Every other weekend rotation required
- No on-call responsibilities
- May float to the ED Transition Care Unit
- Schedule is set on a 6-week cycle with RTO subject to manager approval
Requirements
- Active NC or compact RN license required
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and TNCC
- Minimum 2 years of ED experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
- Level 1 Trauma Center experience required
- Academic or teaching hospital experience preferred given the facility setting
- Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
- Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
- Minimum 1 professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
Additional Information
- Unit is currently undergoing renovation (2nd of 3 phases complete); post-renovation will include 2 fixed-wing helicopter pads
- Travelers are not likely to be assigned to trauma bays during initial contracts
- Department support includes ED Techs (ADLs, vitals, I/O, foley, phlebotomy), Unit Secretary, Charge Nurse, Pod Leader Resource Nurses, Paramedic Staff, SANE Quality Coordinator, and 24/7 coverage from Critical Care Pharmacists, RT, Hospitalist, and Intensivist
- Orientation includes facility-wide NEO and 2 days of departmental orientation
- Travelers are expected to work 75% of holidays
- Scrub color: Royal Blue

- First-time travelers will be considered only with 3+ years of Level 1 Trauma Center experience
- Candidates who have previously worked a permanent position at an Advocate Health Southeast (AHSE) facility must have been separated for at least 1 year to be eligible
