Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a PreOp-PACU position in Rapid City, SD, requiring at least 1.5 years of PACU experience and active BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
Details
- Hospital-based PreOp-PACU unit with 24 Pre-Op/Phase 2 beds and 19 PACU beds
- Patient population spans infants through geriatric, including ambulatory/elective and acute care/trauma cases; Endo patients are prepped and discharged but not recovered intra-operatively
- Patient ratios: Pre-Op 1:2-3, PACU 1:1 or 1:2, Phase 2 1:2-4 — all ratios dependent on acuity, airway status, age, comorbidities, and special monitoring needs
- Night shift RNs (2030–0700) must have critical care experience including ICU-level cases, hemodynamic drips, and ventilated patients
- Variable shift options include days (0500–2300) or nights (1830–0700) on 10-hour shifts, 40 hours per week
- Weekend call rotation required approximately every 3 weeks (varied hours Friday–Sunday); day shift RNs also have a 2300–0700 on-call shift approximately every 2-3 weeks Monday–Friday; night shift RNs are exempt from the overnight call requirement
- On-call response time is 15 minutes; a sleep room is available on-site
- Routine floating within the department: PreOp, PACU, Phase 2, and Endo prep/discharge
- Epic EMR used; candidates without Epic experience should note this during the application process
- Omnicell medication dispensing system in use
Requirements
- Active RN license issued by or accepted by the South Dakota Board of Nursing (SD state or compact license required)
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and PALS
- Minimum 1.5 years of PACU experience required
- Night shift candidates must have demonstrated critical care competencies including hemodynamic drip management and ventilator management
- Competency with IV insertion, ventilator management, epidural/PCA setup and initiation, blood product transfusion initiation, and moderate sedation administration and monitoring
- DOB and SSN required for consideration
- Two professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
Additional Information
- First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
- Candidates must reside more than 100 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
- Orientation consists of one week of facility and unit orientation, with one day spent in each department: PreOp, PACU, Phase 2, and Endo
- CNA support is available during daytime hours (0530–1700) with 1–2 aides in PreOp, 1 in the pre-procedure endoscopy unit, 1 floating aide in PACU, and 1–2 in Phase 2
- Charge nurse coverage provided from 0500 through 2300; 3 Clinical Resource nurses available Monday–Friday
- RT, hospitalist, anesthesia/CRNA, and phlebotomy support available as needed; all nurses are trained in IV insertion with CRNA assistance available for midline or difficult access
- Nurses may be expected to board admitted patients when inpatient beds are unavailable
- Holidays are covered through on-call rotation; expect to work approximately 2 holidays per year
- No RTO will be approved during the first 3 weeks of August (Sturgis Bike Rally period)
