Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Pediatric ICU position requiring a minimum of 2 years of PICU experience, WV or compact RN license, and comfort with adult patients.
Details
- 20-bed PICU within a children's hospital, with an average daily census of approximately 15 patients
- Patient population includes congenital heart, DKA, respiratory, neurosurgery, tracheostomies, ventilator-dependent patients, G-tube patients, and may include adult patients
- ICU patient ratio is 1:1-2; stepdown ratio is 1:3
- RNs are required to titrate drips including sedation protocols (Fentanyl, Versed, Precedex) and vasoactive drugs per physician orders; TPN and MIVF also common
- Ventilators, CPAP, and BiPAP are in use on the unit and managed by respiratory therapy
- Telemetry is monitored off-unit, with central monitors at both the ICU and stepdown desks
- Charting is done in Epic
- 12-hour shifts (7a-7p or 7p-7a) on a day/night rotating schedule, 3 shifts per week
- Two weekends required per 4-week schedule; Friday, Saturday, and Sunday all count as weekend shifts for both day and night shifts
- Holiday coverage is required and travelers are worked into the permanent staff holiday rotation
- No on-call or standby requirement
- Floating is required within the children's hospital (L&D, NICU, and Acute Peds) at normal ratios for the float unit
- Self-scheduling is available; block scheduling is possible provided unit needs are met
Requirements
- Active WV or compact RN license required
- Current BLS and PALS certifications required
- Minimum 2 years of PICU experience is a hard requirement
- Comfort with taking adult patients is required
- Epic EMR experience preferred
- Driver's license address must reflect a residence more than 50 miles from the facility
- COVID vaccination is required; medical or religious exemptions may be requested through a formal exemption process
- Two supervisor/peer references required (at least one supervisor reference; if permanent employment within the last 12 months, one reference must be from that facility)
- Skills checklist completed within the past year required for consideration
- Copies of certifications and driver's license required for consideration
Additional Information
- Responsibilities include titrating sedation and vasoactive drips, caring for ventilator-dependent and complex pediatric patients, and supporting respiratory and neurosurgical cases
- Nurse aides are available on the unit; daytime staffing includes 1-2 aides, nights have 1 aide, assisting with feedings, blood glucose checks, and equipment needs
- A charge nurse is assigned depending on staffing, with efforts made to keep a free charge when possible; a house supervisor is also available
- In-house pediatrician, resident, and APP coverage is available 24/7 with a call room on the unit
- Orientation includes Epic training, nursing skills orientation (NSO), competency and equipment review with a clinical preceptor, and 3 mentored shifts in the PICU
- Dark gray (pewter) scrubs are required
- Candidates who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before returning; this applies cumulatively — travelers who have worked within the WVU system for a cumulative year must also take a 2-year break before reapplying
- First-time travelers are not mentioned as eligible; 2 years of PICU experience is a hard requirement
