Details

  • Neuro ICU setting within a Comprehensive Stroke Center
  • Patient population includes ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes (SAH), SDH, craniotomies, carotid stents/endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, depth electrodes, and myasthenia gravis — stroke patients represent the largest portion of the census
  • Patient ratio is 2:1, with the possibility of flexing to 3:1 during high census periods
  • Average daily census of 11–12 patients
  • Night shift: 12-hour nights, 18:45–07:15 (3x12)
  • Every other weekend required
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating is required
  • Drains in use include EVDs, lumbar drains, hemovacs, and Camino ICP monitoring
  • Special equipment includes EVD, Lumbar Drains, Camino, LICOX, NICOM, and Arctic Sun
  • EMR: Epic (also uses Pyxis and SBAR communication framework)
  • 13-week contract with the possibility of extension beyond 13 weeks

Requirements

  • Active NC or Compact RN license required; license pending at time of consideration is acceptable
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU experience required — strong neuro critical care background is mandatory; general ICU experience alone is not sufficient
  • Required skills: ventilator management, IV starts, interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, blood product administration, central line care/management, continuous IV sedation, CVA/acute stroke management, EVD management, ICP monitoring, post-neurosurgery management, care of ventilated patients, isolation precautions/PPE, and lumbar drain experience
  • Arterial line management experience preferred
  • Must pass an EKG competency test prior to start
  • Two manager/supervisor references from within the past 2 years required; pending at time of consideration is acceptable but must be on file by start date

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
  • Previous permanent, PRN, or EP staff employees of Novant Health or New Hanover Regional must wait 12 months before being eligible to apply as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
  • Orientation is 24 hours (2 days or 2 nights); no RTO is permitted during the first week due to orientation
  • Pre-start modules of approximately 8–10 hours are required and must be completed before the assignment begins; modules are completed via online learning, Zoom, webinar, or in-person sessions and are required annually
  • Candidates must be available to work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved as long as it does not fall on a holiday; requests exceeding 7 days require facility approval; RTO after booking cannot be arranged onsite — call-offs or unapproved RTO may result in contract cancellation
  • Travel pairs are welcome; each traveler must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
  • Scrub colors: navy blue and white
  • Local candidates within 50 miles of the facility are accepted
