Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced travel RN for a Neuro ICU position at a comprehensive stroke center, requiring a minimum of 2 years of Neuro ICU experience and night shift availability.

Details

  • Neuro ICU setting within a comprehensive stroke center
  • Patient population includes ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes (SAH), SDH, craniotomies, carotid stents and endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, depth electrodes, and myasthenia gravis
  • Stroke patients represent one of the largest patient populations on the unit
  • Patient ratio is 2:1, with potential to flex up to 3:1 during high census
  • Average daily census of 11–12 patients
  • Specialized drains and equipment used include EVD, lumbar drains, Camino ICP monitor, LICOX, NICOM, and Arctic Sun
  • EMR: Epic (also uses Pyxis and SBAR communication framework)
  • 12-hour night shifts, 18:45–07:15, three shifts per week (36 hrs)
  • Every other weekend required
  • Floating required
  • No on-call requirement
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required; may be submitted with license pending
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU experience required — general ICU experience alone does not qualify
  • Strong neuro critical care background required
  • Required skills: mechanical ventilation, IV insertion, neuro intensive care, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, blood product administration, central line care and management, continuous IV sedation, CVA/acute stroke management, EVD and ICP monitoring, post-neurosurgery management, care of ventilated patients, isolation precautions and PPE use, and lumbar drain experience
  • Arterial line management experience preferred
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start
  • Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 2 years required (pending at time of consideration is acceptable, but must be on file prior to start)

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
  • Former permanent, PRN, or EP staff of this health system must wait 12 months before applying as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
  • Local candidates within 50 miles of the facility are accepted
  • Orientation consists of 24 hours over 2 nights
  • 8–10 hours of pre-start online modules required (must also be completed annually)
  • No RTO permitted during the first week of the assignment due to orientation
  • Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved as long as it does not fall on a holiday; additional RTO requires facility approval, and excessive call-offs could result in contract cancellation
  • Candidate must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • Travel pairs are accepted; each must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
  • Navy blue and white scrubs required
