Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Staff Float Pool Med/Surg position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and Cerner or Epic proficiency.

Details

  • Float pool position with assignment to a home unit on the first day of orientation — potential units include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, Med/Surg Oncology, Clinical Decision, Orthopedics, and MS/Ortho/Urology
  • Level II Trauma Center with a Level III NICU and Primary Stroke Center designation
  • Patient populations vary by unit and include general/vascular surgery, neuro (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy, spinal fusion), oncology, orthopedics, urology, ENT, and general Med/Surg conditions such as CHF, COPD, sepsis, and renal failure
  • Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit assignment
  • Telemetry is monitored by Telemetry Techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 for VS, ADLs, glucose checks), charge nurses, HUC/receptionist, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalists
  • EMR: Cerner (preferred); IV pumps: Plum 360; Medication dispensing: Omnicell; Monitors: Spacelabs
  • 12-hour day shifts, 7:00 AM–7:00 PM, with 36 hours per week standard
  • Night shift availability also exists (7:00 PM–7:00 AM)
  • Weekend rotation of every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating may occur to like units (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU task, MS-to-ER holds)
  • Scheduling follows a 4-week cycle using Smart Square — no self-scheduling
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active AL RN license or Compact RN license required (can be pending at time of consideration, but ETA must be provided)
  • Current certifications: BLS and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required
  • Epic or Cerner experience required; if experience is ICU-only, Cerner is required
  • Telemetry interpretation experience preferred — candidates with tele experience should provide details
  • Unit-specific skills may include: wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, blood draws from central lines, trach care, PEG tubes, ostomy care, PCA pumps, central line care, wound vacs, and medication administration
  • Chemo administration certification highly preferred for oncology unit placement
  • Must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
  • One reference from a charge nurse or above from within the past 12 months required for consideration
  • DOB (day and month) and full SSN required for consideration
  • Copy of current certifications required for consideration

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply, provided minimum experience requirements are met
  • Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months before being considered as a traveler (measured from last shift worked to contract start date)
  • Return travelers who have been away from this facility for 1 or more years will complete 24 hours of classroom orientation plus 24 hours of on-unit orientation
  • Holiday coverage is expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per facility policy — specific holiday scheduling is not guaranteed in advance
  • Scrubs: any color accepted
  • Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
