Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a 13-week Med/Surg travel assignment at a Level III trauma acute care hospital, requiring at least 1 year of Med/Surg experience and Epic proficiency.

- 38-bed Med/Surg unit in an acute care hospital setting
- Level III trauma facility
- Patient population includes adults and possibly older teens with diagnoses such as pneumonia, UTI, dehydration, influenza, alcohol withdrawal, respiratory illness, orthopedic surgical patients (hips, knees, shoulders), general surgery (appendix, gallbladder, bowel), spinal surgery (laminectomies, spinal fusions), and urology
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5-6 on both days and nights; must be able to manage a 1:6 assignment
- High patient turnover on day shift — discharges are typically followed by new admissions
- RNs are required to titrate drips; common titratable drips include Heparin, with set-rate drips including Bumex and Lasix
- Cardiac monitoring tech available 24/7; RNs are not required to read their own telemetry strips
- Respiratory therapy support available 24/7; RT equipment includes trachs, CPAP for OSA, BiPAP, and high-flow oxygen (less common)
- Nursing supervisor on duty 24/7; day shift has two charge nurses who do not take patients, night shift has one non-patient charge nurse
- Nurse aides on unit at a 1:8–1:10 ratio, capable of performing accuchecks and vital signs
- EMR: Epic (experience required)
- Day shift, 3x12-hour shifts (6:00 AM – 6:30 PM)
- Weekends and holidays required on an as-needed basis
- May be required to float to the IMCU
Requirements
- Active NE or Compact RN license required
- Current BLS certification (AHA or ARC) required
- Minimum 1 year of Med/Surg nursing experience required
- Experience with Epic EMR documentation required
- Must have experience with the shift applying for (days vs. nights)
- Must be able to manage a 1:6 nurse-to-patient ratio
- Bedside shift report experience required
- BSN not required
Additional Information
- Candidate must reside more than 45 miles from the facility to qualify for this position
- Orientation consists of 1.5 shifts
- No self-scheduling for travel RNs; blocked scheduling may be accommodated on a case-by-case basis
- Key expectations include teamwork (answering call lights, collaborating with CNAs), bedside shift report, and proactive patient rounding
- Scrub color requirement: navy blue
