Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a 13-week Stepdown/IMU travel assignment requiring day/night rotation and the ability to titrate cardiac drips in an acute care setting.

Details

  • Acute care Intermediate Care Unit (IMU) in a 30-bed stepdown setting (14 private, 16 semi-private rooms)
  • Patient population includes chest pain, r/o MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post-pacer, pre/post caths, Tikosyn therapy management, and other intermediate-acuity overflow patients
  • Goal nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4, though ratios commonly run 1:5 and occasionally 1:6
  • Charge nurses carry a full patient assignment on both day and night shifts
  • Unit typically has 2–3 CNAs on the floor with ratios of 1:10–12
  • EMR system is Sunrise (Epic network); experience preferred
  • Telemetry monitoring via Nihon Kohden system; RNs must be able to read and interpret their own strips independently, though Tele Techs are available
  • RNs must be able to titrate drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitroglycerin, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
  • All respiratory equipment (AirVo high-flow, Respironics BiPAP) is managed by RT
  • IV team is in-house 24/7 and performs all IV starts; PICC/Midline team also available
  • Hospitalist, intensivist (in ICU), residents, RT, and pharmacy (Pyxis) are all in-house 24/7
  • 12-hour day/night rotating shifts; shifts begin at 7:00 AM or 7:00 PM with required unit arrival by 6:45 AM/PM
  • Weekend shifts include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; day and night shift staff are each required to work 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
  • Staff working day shift are also required to work a minimum of 3 night shifts per 4-week schedule
  • Self-scheduling is permitted as long as unit needs are met; up to 4 requested days off per month allowed
  • Floating is required into Telemetry or Med/Surg units as needed, with ratios up to 1:6 (occasionally 1:7 in Med/Surg)

Requirements

  • Active WV RN license or compact RN license required
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • Stepdown or intermediate care unit experience required
  • Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips independently
  • Ability to titrate cardiac and vasoactive drips
  • A copy of a valid, unexpired driver's license is required for consideration
  • Any licensing hits must be disclosed at time of consideration
  • 2 references required: 1 supervisor reference and 1 peer or additional supervisor reference (e.g., Charge RN); if the candidate worked a permanent position within the last 12 months, one supervisor reference must be from that facility
  • Skills checklist completed within the past year required

Additional Information

  • Orientation consists of approximately 4 hours with HR on day one, followed by the remaining hours on the unit with a preceptor; day two is also spent on the unit with a preceptor, after which the nurse works independently
  • Travelers are expected to be flexible for holiday coverage, though permanent staff typically cover most holidays
  • RN scrub dress code: navy blue top and bottom; navy scrub jackets required (no hoodies)
  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this travel assignment
  • Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a minimum 2-year break before being eligible to return; this applies cumulatively across all WVU facilities
  • Travelers may not work within the WVU system for longer than one cumulative year before a 2-year break is required
  • Candidates may only be submitted to one WVU facility at a time
