Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Tele position specializing in neuro/stroke patient care, requiring at least 2 years of experience including direct Med/Surg experience and a minimum of 2 prior travel contracts.

Details

  • Hospital-based Med/Surg Tele unit with a daily census of 43 beds
  • Primary patient population includes stroke, neurosurgery, epilepsy, traumatic and non-traumatic subdural hematomas, and other neuro diagnoses
  • Unit includes a 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU); travelers are not typically assigned to the EMU unless trained
  • Patient ratio is 1:6
  • 12-hour night shifts (18:45–07:15), with options for 36 or 48 hours per week
  • Travelers are required to work every other weekend
  • Floating is required to other Med/Surg Tele areas, which may include COVID care units
  • EMR system: Epic; also uses Pyxis and SBAR communication
  • 36-hour unit orientation provided upon start

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required (may be pending at time of consideration)
  • Current certifications required: BLS, NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • ACLS preferred but not required
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience, including at least 1 year of direct Med/Surg experience
  • Med/Surg neuro experience required
  • Proficiency in IV insertion, telemetry monitoring, and interpretation and management of dysrhythmias required
  • Must pass an EKG test prior to start
  • Must have completed at least 2 successful travel contracts; first-time travelers will not be considered
  • Two professional manager/supervisor references from within the past 12 months are highly preferred; references may be pending at time of consideration but are required prior to start

Additional Information

  • Provide nursing care to a neuro-focused Med/Surg Tele patient population, including stroke, epilepsy, and neurosurgical cases
  • Candidates who previously worked as permanent, PRN, or employed staff at Novant Health or New Hanover Regional must wait 12 months before applying as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
  • RTO is not permitted during the first week of assignment due to orientation; up to 7 days of RTO may be auto-approved as long as it does not fall on a holiday, and anything beyond that requires facility approval
  • Candidate must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • If a weekend shift is missed due to a call-off, the shift must be made up based on unit needs
  • Pre-start and annual online modules are required (approximately 8–10 hours for acute care roles); modules are completed via online learning, Zoom, webinar, or in-person classes
  • Travel pairs are permitted; each traveler must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
  • Contracts are a minimum of 13 weeks, with the possibility of extension; candidates may indicate preference for 36 or 48 hours per week
  • Navy scrubs required
  • Local candidates within 50 miles of the facility are accepted
