Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a PCU (Progressive Care Unit) position requiring a minimum of 2 years of cardiac floor experience and ACLS certification, working night shifts at a hospital in North Carolina.
Details
- Progressive Care Unit (PCU) in an acute care hospital setting
- Patient population includes cardiac and vascular diagnoses such as A-fib, CHF, ACS, CAD, aortic and mitral valve conditions, endocarditis, cardiomyopathy, PVD/PAD, vasculitis, carotid stenosis, and venous stasis
- Special procedures include CABG, AVR, MVR, TAVR, Mitral Clip, LAAO (Watchman), VATS, carotid endarterectomy, FEM-POP bypass, amputations, post-cath, post-DCCV, post-EP procedures, and pacemaker placements
- Patient ratios: 1:4 for surgical step-down; 1:5–6 for lower acuity
- Night shift only: 3x12-hour shifts (18:45–07:15)
- 4 weekend shifts required per 4-week period (flexible)
- Float rotation follows unit schedule; travelers are not first to float
- Required skills include cardiac telemetry monitoring, interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, sheath removal, post-MI care, pre/post cardiac cath care, cardiac drip management and titration, chest tube management (Emerson/Pleuravac), external CPAP/BiPAP, nasal cannula, and non-invasive airway management
- Preferred skills include arterial line management, wound care/wound vac, and charge nurse experience
- Equipment used includes Doppler, bladder scanner, EKG, femoral sheaths, TR band, Fem-stop, chest tubes, epicardial pacing wires, and arterial lines (preferred but not required)
- EMR system: Epic (documentation); Pyxis (medication); SBAR (communication)
- Contract length: 13–26 weeks
Requirements
- Active NC or Compact RN license required
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 2 years of cardiac floor experience required
- Prior travel nursing experience required unless the candidate has more than 24 months of cardiac experience
- Must pass EKG testing prior to start
- Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 12 months are highly preferred for consideration; references are required by the start date
Additional Information
- Orientation is 24 hours; no RTO permitted during the first week of the assignment due to orientation
- Pre-start modules are required (approximately 8–10 hours for acute care roles) and must also be completed annually; modules are delivered via online learning, Zoom, webinar, and in-person classes
- Candidate must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
- Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved as long as it does not fall on a holiday; requests exceeding 7 days require facility approval; no RTO is permitted after booking without prior approval
- Previous permanent, PRN, or EP staff employees of this health system must wait 12 months before being considered as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
- Contract staff are expected to participate in Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team assignments and may be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty incidents, or disasters; unit consolidation mid-contract may occur
- Travel pairs are permitted; each traveler must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
- Navy scrubs required
- Local candidates are accepted; candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility are eligible at a different rate
- Every candidate will be interviewed prior to placement
