American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a 13-week Surgical ICU travel contract at a Level II Trauma Center in Wisconsin, requiring ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications and a minimum of 2 years of ICU experience.
Details
- Position is in a 16-bed SICU (plus 2 procedural beds) within an acute care hospital serving as a tertiary care center
- Level II Trauma Center caring for high-acuity surgical patients including cardiovascular surgery (CABG, AVR, MVR, AAA), vascular surgery, neurosurgery, general surgery, ortho, ENT, and trauma patients
- Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:2 standard, 1:1 for higher acuity patients (e.g., CRRT, immediate post-op hearts, MTP, OPO), and 1:3 for med-surg/floor-status patients
- RNs are required to titrate drips including epi, norepi, propofol, precedex, vasopressin, dobutamine, heparin, insulin, dopamine, neo, and milrinone
- RNs monitor their own patients' telemetry and read and document rhythm strips using GE monitors
- Respiratory therapy equipment in use includes ventilators, BiPAP, vapotherm, and others; RT is available in the ICU 24/7
- Charting is performed in Cerner (transitioning to Epic)
- 12-hour night shifts, 1900–0730
- Every other weekend required, with additional weekend shifts welcomed if available
- Every other holiday required
- Floating may be required to the MICU or to a patient observer role within the hospital if census is low
Requirements
- Active WI RN license or compact RN license (must be active by start date)
- Required certifications: ACLS (AHA), BLS (AHA), and NIHSS — all must be active
- TNCC preferred but not required
- Minimum 2 years of ICU RN experience required
- Experience with high-acuity surgical and cardiovascular ICU patient populations required
- Experience with CRRT, IABP, Impella, and ECMO is not required but strongly preferred
- Two professional references required for consideration: one from a supervisor within the last 12 months of relevant experience, and one from a peer or supervisor within the last 3 years of relevant specialty experience
Additional Information
- All nurses care for POD 1 heart patients; immediate post-op heart patients are cared for 1:1 by specifically trained nurses
- A charge nurse is present on every shift and typically does not carry a patient assignment, though may based on census; a Nursing House Supervisor is available 24/7
- One nursing aide is available for the entire unit on day shift; NA coverage is not typical on nights
- Orientation consists of one day of system onboarding/CBT, followed by two unit orientation shifts; a skills checklist must be completed
- No specific scrub color is required — clean and professional attire is expected
- Candidates who have previously worked for this health system as permanent staff must have an end date at least 6 months prior to their consideration date, and hospital approval is required
- Candidates residing within 80 miles of the facility are considered local, which may affect the travel pay rate
