Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro Stepdown & EMU (Epilepsy Monitoring Unit) position requiring strong neuro experience, NIHSS certification, and Epic proficiency.
Details
- Work in a 31-bed Neuro Stepdown & Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) within an acute care hospital setting
- Patient population includes higher-acuity neuroscience patients with diagnoses such as stroke, seizures, craniotomies, and post-TPA management
- Stepdown nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3; EMU (floor) ratio is 1:5–6
- Nurse aides are available on the unit with a ratio of 1:8–9
- Charge nurse coverage is available 24/7
- Respiratory therapy is available 24/7 and manages floor vents; RNs are not required to have vent experience
- Telemetry is present on the unit; RNs are not required to read strips
- Titratable drips are managed per physician orders; common drips include Amiodarone, Cardizem, Nitro, Dopamine, Nipride, Ketamine, Lasix, Bumex, and Insulin
- Charting is performed using Epic (experience required)
- 12-hour night shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
- Three 12-hour shifts per week; three consecutive shifts may be accommodated but are not guaranteed — travelers must remain flexible
- Every other weekend (EOW) or 2 weekend shifts per schedule required
- Floating may be required to units 7E, 7W, 7NE, or 10W
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active WV or compact RN license required
- Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required; ACLS preferred
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Strong neuro nursing background required, including experience caring for stroke patients and implementing NIH stroke scale assessments
- Experience with Epic EMR required
- BSN not required
- Driver's license address must reflect a residence more than 50 miles from the facility
- Must provide a driver's license copy and copies of all certifications for consideration
- 2 references required: 1 supervisor reference and 1 peer or additional supervisor reference (e.g., Charge RN)
Additional Information
- Provide stepdown-level nursing care to high-acuity neuroscience patients including stroke, seizure, craniotomy, and EMU monitoring cases
- EVD experience is preferred, though perm staff are typically assigned EVD patients; TPA patients 24 hours post-administration are managed by permanent staff only
- Unit orientation consists of 2 shifts on the unit
- Travelers are expected to participate in the holiday rotation
- Royal blue scrubs required
- COVID vaccination is required; medical or religious exemptions may be requested
- Candidates who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before being considered
- Travelers may not work within the WVU system for longer than one cumulative year without taking a 2-year break
