Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Medical Oncology PCU (Progressive Care Unit) position requiring high-acuity PCU experience and Ohio or compact RN licensure, with day/night rotating shifts available.
Details
- Medical Oncology Progressive Care Unit (PCU) within a cancer hospital setting
- 36-bed Oncology Telemetry unit with over 24 beds dedicated to PCU-level care; remaining beds are Med/Surg Telemetry
- Patient population includes solid tumor, orthopedic oncology, and thoracic oncology diagnoses
- PCU patient ratio is 1:3; Med/Surg Telemetry ratio is 1:4-5
- Pediatric patients are occasionally present on the unit but are extremely rare and typically managed by permanent staff; pediatric experience is not required
- Heavy emphasis on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
- Rotating day/night shifts (12-hour shifts, 3x per week); shift assignments reviewed every 4-week scheduling period based on staffing needs
- Day shift hours: 7:00–19:30; Night shift hours: 19:00–7:30
- Self-scheduling requests are submitted by the traveler prior to schedule finalization
- Floating required within units of equivalent or lower acuity
- Equipment used includes GE B450 telemetry monitors, Bladder Scanner, Alaris pumps, Stryker beds, and PCA pumps
- Procedures performed include continuous bladder irrigation (CBI), chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), CPAP/BiPAP, and HFNC
Requirements
- Active OH or compact RN license required
- Required certifications: BLS (BCLS), ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of high-acuity PCU experience required
- Oncology experience preferred but not required
- Required skills: cardiac dysrhythmia interpretation, rapid response team activation, feeding tube care, port access, blood product administration, central/PICC/peripheral line management, IV insertion, heparin protocols, cardiac drip management (non-titrating and titrating), PCA management, chest tube management, CPAP/BiPAP, HFNC, ABG interpretation, tracheostomy management
- Preferred skills: dysrhythmia management, IV insulin/insulin drip titration, phlebotomy, chemotherapy administration and monitoring, wound care/wound vac, arterial line management, surgical drain management, non-invasive airway management
- Previous travel experience preferred
- 2 professional references required: at least 1 must be from a Manager, Director, or formal leadership role (e.g., Supervisor); a Charge RN is acceptable as the 2nd reference; coworker references are not accepted
- Ohio fingerprinting is required upon contract signing; candidates outside Ohio must complete this process as soon as possible after booking
Additional Information
- Orientation consists of one week of Mon–Fri day shift classroom/general orientation, followed by a second week of 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor
- Former employees of this facility are eligible for a travel assignment after a minimum 6-month separation
- Local candidates are accepted at the same rate as travelers
- Requested time off (RTO) must be disclosed prior to consideration and is limited to 7 days or less for the contract duration
- Parking is available for agency staff through CampusParc, with multiple permit options at the traveler's own expense

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.
Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
