Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU/HVU) position in Rapid City, SD, requiring cardiac stepdown experience and a SD or compact RN license.
Details
- Mixed acuity unit (Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and Med-Surg) within a 44-bed Heart & Vascular Unit (HVU)
- Patient population includes direct admits, ED admits, post-cath lab, MI/NSTEMI/STEMI, CHF, dysrhythmia management, pacemaker malfunction, epicardial pacers, backup stroke, and medical overflow
- Step-down level experience expected with post cardiac/vascular, post-cardiac cath, post open heart surgery, post-TAVR, post-EP studies, and post-pacemaker insertion patients
- RN-to-patient ratio is typically 1:4, with the possibility of 1:3 depending on acuity
- 12-hour day shifts, 36 hours per week
- Every other weekend rotation required
- No on-call responsibilities
- Floating may occur to the sister General PCU unit, and less frequently to MS/Tele or ICU for PCU-level patients; floating is within or below scope of practice
- Charting system: Epic (experience preferred; notify if candidate lacks Epic experience)
- Equipment includes Alaris infusion pumps and Omnicell medication dispensing
- Tele techs oversee cardiac monitoring; RNs confirm rhythm strips at 6am and 6pm
Requirements
- Active RN license — South Dakota (SD) or compact state license required
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Minimum 1.5 years of general nursing experience required
- PCU-level RN experience required
- Experience with cardiac procedural recovery (CABG, TAVR, post-cardiac cath) required
- Proficiency with MI pharmacology and titratable cardiac/vasoactive drips (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Levophed, Dopamine) and Heparin drips required
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation and chest tube management experience required
- TNK administration experience preferred
- Completion of a board-of-nursing approved nursing education program required
- Two professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
- DOB and SSN required for consideration
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are considered with 2 or more years of experience
- Candidates must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible
- Former permanent staff must wait 1 full year before returning as a traveler
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:5–8 ratio), an unassigned charge nurse, phlebotomy for peripheral blood draws, occasional resource nurse coverage, RT available 24/7, and a hospitalist in-facility 24/7
- Orientation includes 2 partial days of education followed by 3 12-hour shifts on the unit
- Holiday coverage required on a rotating basis (every other)
- RTO of up to 7 days may be approved; candidates taking a full week off must extend their contract accordingly
- No time off permitted during the first 3 weeks of August (Sturgis Motorcycle Rally period)
- Scrubs: Navy blue required
