Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Stepdown/IMU position requiring ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications, with the ability to titrate cardiac drips and interpret telemetry strips.

Details

  • 30-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMU) in an acute care hospital setting
  • Patient population includes chest pain, rule-out MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post-pacer, pre/post cath (radial band management and removal, groin checks), and Tikosyn therapy patients
  • Nihon Kohden telemetry monitoring system in use; telemetry techs are present but RNs must be able to independently read and interpret their own strips
  • Goal nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4, though ratios commonly run 1:5 and occasionally 1:6
  • 2–3 CNAs on the unit with a ratio of approximately 1:10–12
  • EMR: Sunrise (Epic system); Epic experience is preferred
  • 12-hour day shifts; shift start time is 7:00 AM with staff expected on the unit by 6:45 AM
  • Weekends as scheduled — days shift requires 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule; staff may also be required to work a minimum of 3 night shifts per 4-week schedule
  • Floating required into Telemetry or Med/Surg units as needed, with ratios up to 1:6 (occasionally 1:7 in Med/Surg)
  • Self-scheduling is permitted as long as unit needs are met; staff may request up to 4 days off per month
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active WV or Compact RN license required
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • Stepdown or intermediate care unit experience required
  • Ability to titrate cardiac drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitroglycerin, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
  • Ability to independently read and interpret telemetry strips
  • BSN not required
  • Valid, unexpired driver's license required for consideration
  • Any licensing hits or disciplinary actions must be disclosed

Additional Information

  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
  • Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before reapplying; cumulative time worked within the WVU system cannot exceed one year before a 2-year break is required
  • Orientation consists of approximately 4 hours with HR on day one, followed by the remaining hours on the unit with a preceptor, plus a second full day with a preceptor before independent practice begins
  • Attendance is strictly enforced; tardiness and call-offs count as occurrences, and 2 occurrences within the contract may result in termination — any emergencies must be reported more than 2 hours before the shift
  • Holiday flexibility is expected, though travelers are not typically required to work many holidays as permanent staff generally provide coverage
  • RN scrub color: navy blue top and bottom; navy scrub jackets permitted, no hoodies
  • Supportive resources available 24/7 include hospitalist, intensivist (in ICU), residents, IV team (performs all IV starts), PICC/Midline team, respiratory therapy, and pharmacy (Pyxis)
  • All respiratory equipment is managed by respiratory therapy (AirVo high-flow, Respironics BiPAP)
  • 2 professional references required: one supervisor reference and one peer or additional supervisor reference (e.g., charge RN); if the candidate has worked a permanent position in the last 12 months, one supervisor reference must be from that employer
  • Skills checklist completed within the past year is required for consideration
