Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Medical Oncology PCU position requiring high-acuity progressive care experience and telemetry skills on a day/night rotating schedule.
Details
- 36-bed Medical Oncology Telemetry unit with over 24 beds dedicated to PCU-level care in a hospital setting
- Patient population includes solid tumor, orthopedic oncology, and thoracic oncology diagnoses, with a small med/surg census
- PCU patient ratio is 1:3; med/surg telemetry ratio is 1:4-5
- Day and night rotating shifts (3x12-hour shifts); scheduling assignments are reviewed every 4-week period based on staffing needs
- Self-scheduling requests are submitted prior to the final schedule being posted
- Floating required to units of equivalent or lower acuity
- Equipment in use includes GE B450 telemetry monitors, Alaris pumps, PCA pumps, Stryker beds, bladder scanners, and continuous bladder irrigation systems
Requirements
- Active OH or Compact RN license required
- Required certifications: BLS (BCLS), ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of high-acuity PCU experience required
- Oncology experience preferred but not required
- Proficiency with telemetry and dysrhythmia interpretation required
- Required clinical skills include: central line care/management, PICC line management, port access, blood product administration, peripheral IV insertion, heparin protocols, cardiac drip management, PCA management, chest tube care (Emerson/Pleur-evac), tracheostomy management, feeding tube care, external CPAP/BiPAP, high flow nasal cannula (HFNC), ABG interpretation, and use of rapid response teams
- 2 professional references required: at least 1 must be from a Manager, Director, or Supervisor; a Charge RN is acceptable as the second reference — co-worker references are not accepted
Additional Information
- Oncology-focused care with a heavy emphasis on infection prevention protocols and fall prevention
- Pediatric patients may be present on the unit but are extremely rare and are typically cared for by permanent staff — pediatric experience is not required
- Preferred skills include: chemotherapy administration and monitoring, arterial line management, wound care/wound vac, IV insulin and insulin drip titration, non-invasive airway management, phlebotomy, and surgical drain management
- Orientation consists of one week of Monday–Friday day shift orientation followed by a second week of 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor
- All candidates must complete Ohio state fingerprinting — this process should be initiated as soon as possible after accepting the position
- Former employees of the facility are eligible for a travel assignment after a 6-month separation period
- RTO must be submitted upfront and is limited to 7 days or less for the contract duration
- Local candidates are accepted at the same rate as travelers
- Parking is available for purchase on-site through the hospital's campus parking program

Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
