Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a full-time ICU Charge Float Pool position in the Denver/Zone 3 region of Colorado, requiring prior charge nurse experience and the ability to float across multiple facilities within a 60-mile zone.

Details

  • Acute care ICU setting covering a multi-facility float zone centered around Denver, CO — including OrthoColorado Hospital (Lakewood), Longmont United Hospital (Longmont), St. Anthony Hospital (Lakewood), and St. Anthony North Hospital (Westminster)
  • Combination ICU unit encompassing MICU, SICU, TICU, CVICU, and similar critical care environments
  • Patient population consists of high-acuity ICU cases including patients on CRRT, IABP, Impella, and other critical interventions
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:1–2 depending on acuity, with flexibility to flex up to 1:3; high-acuity patients (CRRT, IABP, Impella) require 1:1 staffing
  • Charge nurses do not typically take a patient assignment, though night shift charge nurses may occasionally carry a small assignment
  • No nurse aides on unit; sitter support available for those needs only
  • Respiratory therapy is available for ICU but may not be on the unit 24/7; RNs are expected to assist with troubleshooting and managing respiratory needs
  • Respiratory equipment includes ventilators, CPAP, BiPAP, high-flow oxygen, and breathing treatments
  • No monitor techs; RNs are required to read and interpret their own telemetry strips independently
  • 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a)
  • 6–9 weekend shifts required per 6-week schedule
  • Schedules are released 4–6 weeks in advance and may follow a single-facility weekly format or a Just-In-Time (JIT) format with facility assignment given 1–2 hours before shift start
  • Uses Epic EMR

Requirements

  • Active CO RN license or Compact (NLC) RN license required; must be active at time of consideration — pending licenses not accepted
  • Required certifications (all must be active, AHA-issued): BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, TNCC
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU experience and prior charge nurse experience required
  • First-time travelers must have 3+ years of ICU experience and Epic experience
  • Must be comfortable titrating all critical drips including pressors, sedation, paralytics, antiarrhythmics, heparin, and insulin
  • Candidates must reside at least 60 miles from the Denver city center (the zone's geographic center) — a driver's license is required for address verification
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked; references must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
  • Driver's license required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Serves as designated charge RN for the ICU unit; responsibilities include responding to codes and rapid responses throughout the hospital
  • Travelers are expected to float throughout the full Zone 3 area (60-mile radius from Denver city center) and are responsible for securing housing that makes this feasible
  • Scrubs may be any color
  • Orientation consists of 1–2 days with a preceptor (12 orientation hours total); clinicians must be physically present in-state for the week of orientation even if initial modules are completed remotely
  • All time-off requests must be submitted prior to the start of the assignment
  • May be asked to participate in the holiday rotation
  • On-call or standby requirements are rare and typically only for low-census situations
  • Floating may include other acuity levels such as PCU/Stepdown and Med-Surg Telemetry in addition to ICU
  • Prior travel experience is preferred
  • First-time travelers are considered if they meet the elevated experience requirements
  • Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit or affiliated facility (including CHI and/or Dignity) within the past year are not eligible; candidates who worked PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
American Traveler Job ID #P-716754. Pay package is based on 12 hour shifts and 36 hours per week (subject to confirmation) with tax-free stipend amount to be determined. Posted job title: Travel RN - ICU Float
