Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU/Stepdown) position requiring ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications, with night shift availability and telemetry interpretation skills.

Details

  • Acute care stepdown/PCU unit in a hospital setting
  • 28-bed unit with a 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio and 1:14 nurse aide-to-patient ratio
  • Patient population consists of adults, primarily arriving through the ER, with mixed medical/surgical, cardiac, and stroke diagnoses
  • RNs are required to titrate drips, including heparin, octreotide, and insulin
  • Telemetry monitoring is present on the unit; RNs must be able to independently read and interpret telemetry rhythms
  • Specialty equipment includes code carts, LUCAS machines, Hoyer lifts, and Sit-and-Stand devices
  • EMR: Epic (used in this position)
  • 12-hour night shifts (1830–0700)
  • 6-week scheduling cycle managed by unit schedulers
  • Weekend requirement: 6 weekend shifts per 6-week schedule period (night weekends are Fridays and Saturdays)
  • Floating may be required to Med/Surg and other hospital areas, including ICU and ED, based on abilities
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active NE state or Compact (NLC) RN license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • Required certifications (must be active; no pending certifications accepted): BLS, ACLS, NIHSS
  • Experience in a stepdown, PCU, or progressive care setting required
  • Ability to read and interpret telemetry rhythms independently
  • Experience titrating drips (heparin, octreotide, insulin) required
  • Driver's license required for consideration — used to verify residence is at least 50 miles from the facility
  • 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years — must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
  • Candidates must reside at least 50 miles from the facility to be eligible

Additional Information

  • This is a high-volume unit with frequent admissions, transfers, and discharges — candidates should be comfortable in a fast-paced environment and committed to collaborative teamwork
  • A charge nurse is present on every shift; the charge nurse carries an assignment
  • Unit support includes nurse aides/patient care techs, a unit secretary 2–3 days/week, and a stocking clerk 3 days/week
  • Orientation consists of one week of classroom training followed by two 12-hour shifts of unit-specific orientation
  • A pass/fail open-book exam on unit skills is administered during orientation — a minimum score of 90% is required to pass; failure may result in contract termination
  • Holiday coverage will rotate with permanent staff
  • Navy blue scrubs required
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to remove them may result in contract termination
  • Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity, within the past year are not eligible — candidates who worked PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
  • RTO must be submitted upfront; no more than 7 days per 13-week contract will be approved — additional RTO requests will not be approved after consideration
