Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Oncology unit position requiring a minimum of 2 years of inpatient experience and the ability to administer chemotherapy.

Details

  • Med/Surg unit with a primary patient population of medical-surgical patients, many with oncology history
  • Patient diagnoses include AKI, sepsis, cancer, septic shock, pain, OD, malignant neoplasms, ARF, encephalopathy, FTT, diabetic foot ulcers, and heparin drips
  • Chemotherapy and biotherapy administration (IV, PO, or injection) is performed on this unit
  • Target nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:6; ratios may be higher during periods of increased census
  • Unit daily census is 42
  • Night shift: 3x12-hour shifts (18:45–07:15)
  • Every other weekend required
  • Floating required to similar units and alternate inpatient care locations, including ED inpatient holding
  • Call required if called off on a pre-scheduled shift; called-out shifts must be rescheduled
  • Contract length is 13–26 weeks
  • EMR: Epic (documentation); Pyxis (medication); SBAR (communication)

Requirements

  • Active NC or Compact RN license required
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Oncology certification (OCN) preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of inpatient RN experience required
  • Experience in a Med/Surg inpatient setting required
  • Ability to administer chemotherapy required
  • Required skills: colostomy care, port access, blood product administration, central line blood draws, peripheral line care/management, PICC line management, heparin and insulin drips, surgical drains, chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, isolation precautions, and wound care/wound vac
  • Preferred skills/certifications: CPI, charge nurse experience, OCN certification
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start
  • Two manager/supervisor references from within the past 2 years required (pending at time of consideration is acceptable, but must be on file by start date)

Additional Information

  • Orientation consists of 24 hours (2 shifts), with weekly orientation sessions and 8–10 hours of pre-start online modules
  • Attendance at monthly staff meetings is expected
  • Contract staff will be assigned to a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team and may be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty incidents, or disasters
  • Contract staff are assigned equally alongside permanent staff for patient coverage
  • Candidates must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • No RTO is permitted during the first week of assignment due to orientation; up to 7 days of RTO may be auto-approved (excluding holidays) thereafter
  • Candidates who have previously worked for this health system as permanent, PRN, or EP staff must wait 12 months before applying as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
  • Local candidates are accepted; candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility are subject to a different pay rate
  • Travel pairs are allowed, provided each traveler has their own transportation and is comfortable with potentially different schedules
