Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PACU position at a Level II Trauma Center in Bangor, ME, requiring a minimum of 2-3 years of PACU experience and a ME or compact RN license.
Details
- Work in the Anesthesia Services / PACU unit of a 411-bed Level II Trauma Center
- PACU features 37 recovery rooms: 12 for outpatients, 11 for inpatients, and 6 for overflow, staging, and extended stay patients
- Approximately 50 cases per day with 24/7 OR coverage
- Patient population includes a wide range of inpatient and outpatient procedures from simple to complex surgeries, including trauma, orthopedics (total hip/knee/shoulder arthroplasties), GYN, thoracic, GU, neuro, bariatric, GI/endoscopy, interventional radiology/cardiology, and pediatric cases
- Anesthesia types include MAC, general, and spinal; occasional ICU holds with ventilated/intubated patients
- Shifts are 10 or 12 hours, scheduled from 0530–1500; 36 hours per week on a variable schedule
- Elective cases are performed Monday–Friday; weekend cases tend to be emergent or necessary procedures
- Weekend rotation ranges from every other weekend to once per month depending on census
- On-call required approximately once per month, with a 30-minute callback requirement; call shifts run 11p–5:30a and may fall on a weekday or weekend night (but not both Saturday and Sunday)
- Patient ratio follows ASPAN guidelines at 1:1–2
- Travelers will rotate through Pre-op, Phase 1, and Phase 2 through patient discharge — all one unit
- Charting in Cerner or Epic
Requirements
- Active ME or compact RN license required
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and PALS
- Minimum 2–3 years of PACU experience required
- Pre-op experience required
- Experience with ICU holds, vent management, and critical care drips required
- Proficiency with insulin drips, electrolyte protocols, and heparin protocols required
- Charting experience with Cerner or Epic required
- Candidates must have a permanent address 100+ miles south/southwest of Bangor, ME (candidates residing 100+ miles north will be considered on a case-by-case basis)
- No previous permanent employment at any Northern Light Health Hospital
- Full SSN required for consideration
- Driver's license copy required for consideration
- Two professional references within the past year required, at least one from a supervisor, manager, director, or charge RN (peer references not accepted)
- Copies of all certifications required for consideration
- Flu vaccination required for clearance to start
Additional Information
- Nurses function across the full continuum of care — Pre-op, Phase 1 PACU, Phase 2, and discharge — within one integrated unit
- Shifts may begin in pre-op to prep patients before transitioning to PACU, or may be dedicated to pre-op for the full shift
- Overnight staffing typically includes 2–3 nurses
- Daily PACU staffing includes 11 RNs plus a Charge RN; pre-op staffing includes 9 RNs plus a Charge RN
- Travelers cover PACU call only (not cardiac)
- No sleep room available for on-call shifts
- Orientation consists of 2 days of hospital orientation and 2 days of unit orientation
- Hospital-provided scrubs are required
- Block scheduling cannot be guaranteed but will be accommodated when possible
- All RTO requests must be submitted at the time of consideration
- Manager interviews are required
- First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
