Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Labor & Delivery (LDRP) position at a small community hospital in Maine, requiring a ME or Compact RN license and comfort with all phases of antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and well-baby care.

Details

• Night shift position, 7P–7A, 36 hours per week
• 12-week contract
• Small community hospital with 64 beds and a Level III Nursery averaging approximately 200 deliveries per year
• LDRP unit with 4 Labor beds and 4 Postpartum beds — the same RN covers Antepartum, Intrapartum, Postpartum/Couplet care, and well-baby care throughout the patient's stay
• Rooming-in model with no dedicated nursery or nursery RN — the bedside RN is responsible for newborn care
• Patient population is primarily low-risk OB; all high-risk labor and delivery patients are transferred out
• Common patient types include postpartum hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia, HELLP syndrome, hyperbilirubinemia, NAS babies, and feeders/growers
• Unit also receives low-acuity Med/Surg overflow patients (e.g., IV antibiotics, swing bed, rehab); no infectious or telemetry patients
• Patient ratios follow AWHONN guidelines: 1:2 laboring, 1:1 active labor, 1:3–4 couplets, 1:2–3 Med/Surg overflow
• Charting via Cerner EMR
• Every other weekend rotation required
• No on-call responsibilities
• Holiday rotation every other holiday
• Floating to MS or ED is for task assistance only — no patient assignment taken

Requirements

• Active ME or Compact RN license required
• Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP, and Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring
• STABLE certification required (must be completed within 30 days of start if not already held)
• Minimum 2 years of L&D experience required; first-time travelers considered with at least 3 years of L&D experience
• Experience with all phases of LDRP care: antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum/couplet, and well-baby care
• Skills required include shoulder dystocia management, epidural management, nitrous oxide, intrathecal spinal analgesia, and neonatal care (VS, thermoregulation, hypoglycemia, bilirubin, NAS)
• Cerner EMR experience preferred
• Flu vaccination required for employment eligibility
• Two professional references within the past year required, with at least one from a supervisor, manager, director, or charge nurse (peer references not accepted)
• Full SSN, Driver's License, and copies of all certifications required for consideration
• Candidates must not have previously worked at any Northern Light Health Hospital in a permanent capacity
• Permanent address must be 100+ miles south/southwest of Bangor, ME to qualify for travel status

Additional Information

• Candidate must be comfortable caring for low-acuity Med/Surg overflow patients in addition to OB patients — this should be confirmed prior to offer
• Candidate must be comfortable with all phases of LDRP care and well-baby responsibilities — this should be confirmed prior to offer
• RN will attend C-sections solely to receive the baby and provide neonatal care; circulating C-sections is not required
• Unit is staffed with at least 2–3 nurses overnight; support includes a charge nurse, midwife (primary care provider), OB on call, phlebotomy, HUC (4 days/week), RT 24/7, and hospitalist 24/7; no CNA on unit
• Orientation consists of general hospital orientation plus 1 shift on the unit
• Scrubs may be any color but must be professional; procedural scrubs are provided for OR use only
• Free parking available on site
• All RTO requests must be submitted at the time of consideration and require manager approval

• First-time travelers are considered for this position with a minimum of 3 years of L&D experience
