Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position at a Magnet-designated, Level II Trauma hospital in Alaska, requiring an active AK RN license and Epic proficiency.

Details

  • Progressive Care Unit (PCU) in an acute care hospital setting — a stepdown unit from the ICU serving multiple disciplines
  • 407-bed Magnet-designated facility, Level II Trauma Center, and USNWR Best Hospital in Alaska
  • Diverse patient population including cardiac (CHF, MI, ACS, TAVR, MVR, pacemaker, arrhythmia), respiratory (COVID, flu, COPD, asthma, trach, chronic home vent, high-flow NC, BiPAP), neuro, renal, and complex medical-surgical patients such as ETOH withdrawal and GIB
  • Approximately 30% of the patient population is cardiac in nature
  • Co-Care/Virtual Nursing Model: each patient is supported by one bedside RN, one virtual RN, and one CNA
  • Bedside RN-to-patient ratio is 1:4; CNA ratio is 1:6
  • Charting via Epic (experience required)
  • Night shift: 3x12-hour shifts, 19:00–07:30
  • Weekend coverage may be more frequent than every other weekend and is subject to staffing needs
  • Floating required to lower-acuity units, renal care, neuro, and med-surg within scope
  • No on-call requirements
  • Block scheduling is not available
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active Alaska (AK) RN license currently in hand
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Minimum 1 year of PCU or comparable experience
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Candidates must permanently reside at least 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
  • At least 2 supervisory references covering 1 year of employment within the last 3 years in a comparable specialty/setting required for consideration
  • Full SSN and DOB required for consideration

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • The virtual RN works remotely and assists with admissions, discharges, rounding, patient education, plans of care, and safety rounds — allowing bedside RNs to focus on direct patient care
  • Travelers are expected to float between all facilities within Alaska; refusal to float may result in termination of the assignment
  • Former permanent employees of this health system must wait at least 3 months before returning as a traveler
  • Scrubs are provided by the facility
  • Parking is free
  • RTO is approved on an individual basis and must be disclosed at the time of offer; minimal RTO is preferred
  • Candidates with a pending AK RN license may be considered, but the license must be in hand prior to an offer being extended

Anchorage, AK

About

Anchorage is a unique city surrounded by 5,000-foot-high peaks in the south-central part of Alaska along the Cook Inlet, where abundant salmon and whales swim through. It's filled with cultural sites, including many museums and the Alaska Native Heritage Center, which offers stage performances and displays traditional crafts and replicas of dwellings from indigenous groups in the area. Top-notch eateries serving dishes with locally grown produce and fresh seafood abound, while the two roads running in and out of town lead to some of the world's most majestic wilderness areas. Outdoor activities are plentiful, including hiking and fishing within the city’s borders but only minutes from downtown is Chugach State Park, a 9,000-square-mile park with spectacular terrain for hiking, biking, ATV rides, kayaking, rafting and fishing. Nearby at Beluga Point, watch for the famous white whales that look like they sport permanent grins.
