Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro ICU position at a Comprehensive Stroke Center, requiring a minimum of 2 years of Neuro ICU experience and active NC or compact RN license.
Details
- Neuro ICU setting within a Comprehensive Stroke Center
- Patient population includes ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes (SAH), SDH, craniotomies, carotid stents, carotid endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, depth electrodes, and myasthenia gravis
- Drains used include EVDs, lumbar drains, hemovacs, and Camino ICP monitoring
- Specialized equipment includes LICOX, NICOM, and Arctic Sun
- Patient ratio is 2:1, with the possibility of flexing to 3:1 during high census
- Average daily census of 11–12 patients
- 12-hour night shifts, 18:45–07:15 (3x12)
- Every other weekend required
- Float requirement applies
- No on-call responsibilities
- EMR: Epic (also uses Pyxis and SBAR communication framework)
Requirements
- Active NC or compact RN license required (license pending at time of consideration is acceptable)
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU experience required — general ICU experience alone does not qualify
- Strong neuro critical care background is essential
- Required skills: ventilator management, IV starts, interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, blood product administration, central line care/management, continuous IV sedation, CVA/acute stroke management, EVD and lumbar drain experience, ICP monitoring, post-neurosurgery management, care of ventilated patients, and isolation precautions/PPE use
- Arterial line management experience preferred
- Must pass an EKG assessment prior to start
- Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 12 months are highly preferred
Additional Information
- First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
- Previous permanent, PRN, or EP employees of this health system must wait 12 months before being considered as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
- Local candidates are accepted; candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility are eligible at a reduced rate
- Orientation is approximately 24 hours (2 days or 2 nights), with weekly orientation scheduling
- Pre-start modules are required (approximately 8–10 hours for acute care roles) and must also be completed annually
- No time off (RTO) is permitted during the first week of assignment due to orientation; RTO is not permitted after booking and cannot be arranged on-site
- Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved provided it does not fall on a holiday; additional RTO requires facility approval
- Candidates must be available to work 2 out of 3 major holidays
- Scrub colors: navy blue and white
- Travel pairs are welcome; each traveler must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
- Contracts are a 13-week minimum; interest in longer assignments or preferred hours (36 or 48 per week) may be indicated during the consideration process
