Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro ICU position requiring a minimum of 2 years of Neuro ICU experience and strong critical care skills including ventilator management and stroke care.

Details

  • Neuro ICU in a comprehensive stroke center hospital setting
  • Primary patient population includes ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes (SAH), SDH, craniotomies, carotid stents and endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, depth electrodes, and myasthenia gravis
  • Patient ratio is 2:1 with the possibility of flexing to 3:1 during high census periods; average daily census is 11–12
  • Specialized equipment includes EVD, Lumbar Drains, Camino ICP monitor, LICOX, NICOM, and Arctic Sun
  • EMR system is Epic; additional systems include Pyxis and SBAR
  • 12-hour night shifts (18:45–07:15), 3 shifts per week
  • Every other weekend required
  • Floating required
  • No on-call requirements
  • Local candidates are accepted; candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility are eligible at a different rate

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required (license pending at time of consideration is acceptable)
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU experience required — general ICU experience alone will not be considered
  • Strong neuro critical care background required, with experience in stroke management (ischemic and hemorrhagic)
  • Required skills include: ventilator management, IV start, interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, blood product administration, central line care/management, continuous IV sedation, CVA/acute stroke management, external ventricular drain (EVD) management, ICP monitoring, post-neurosurgery management, care of ventilated patients, isolation precautions/PPE use, and lumbar drain experience
  • Arterial line management experience preferred
  • Must pass an EKG test prior to the start of the assignment
  • Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 12 months are highly preferred (pending references at time of consideration are acceptable)

Additional Information

  • Orientation is approximately 24 hours (2 days or 2 nights); weekly orientation schedule
  • 8–10 hours of pre-start online modules are required and must be completed before the assignment begins
  • Navy blue and white scrubs required
  • Candidates must be available to work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • RTO is not permitted during the first week of the assignment due to orientation; up to 7 days of RTO may be approved provided it does not fall on a holiday — additional RTO beyond 7 days requires facility approval; RTO cannot be arranged directly onsite after booking
  • Previous permanent, PRN, or EP staff employees of this health system must wait 12 months before being considered as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
  • Travel pairs are allowed, provided each traveler has their own transportation and is comfortable with potentially different schedules
  • First-time travelers will not be accepted for this position
