Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg night shift position at a busy acute care hospital in Smyrna, TN, requiring at least 1 year of Med/Surg experience and an active TN or compact RN license.
Details
- Located in the Med/Surg unit of an acute care hospital in Smyrna, TN
- 54-bed unit including an 11-bed dedicated orthopedic/spine floor
- Patient population includes general medical/surgical, orthopedic/spine, stable trauma, psych medical hold, and post-procedural patients (e.g., post-cath, lap appy/chole, thoracentesis/paracentesis, HD/peritoneal dialysis, CBI)
- RN patient ratio is 1:5-6; RN/LPN teams manage approximately 10 patients total per hall
- Unit staffing includes unit secretaries (until 8pm on weekdays), PCTs, externs, and LPNs
- Equipment includes Alaris pumps, remote telemetry, continuous pulse ox, specialty beds, transfer equipment, wound vacs, chest tubes, NG and feeding tubes, bladder scanners, and a 12-lead EKG machine
- Documentation system: Meditech
- Night shift: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
- 13-week contract
- At least one weekend shift required per 4-week period
- Floating within the unit at the unit's discretion
Requirements
- Active RN license — TN or compact state license required
- Current BLS certification (AHA or ARC accepted); ACLS preferred but not required
- Minimum 1 year of recent Med/Surg RN experience required
- Strong assessment, prioritization, critical thinking, and time management skills
- US SSN and date of birth required for consideration
- One professional reference required (two required if licensed in Florida or Missouri)
- No gaps in work history of 90 days or more within the past 12 months

- Responsibilities include providing care for a diverse medical/surgical patient population with a range of acuity levels, including ortho/spine and stable trauma patients
- The unit is ACS Certified, a Hernia Center of Excellence, Spine & Joint Accredited, a Leapfrog Top 100 Hospital, and a Unit of Distinction Honorable Mention recipient (2022)
- Technology in use includes Teletracking for bed placement, MobiLab, PatientKeeper, Inspire App, and Wound Capture
- Grey scrubs are required
- Unit is known for strong teamwork, experienced staff, supportive culture, and consistent communication with department leadership
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility — local candidates are not eligible
- Certifications must not expire within the first 30 days of the assignment start date
