Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and proficiency with Epic or Cerner.

- Float pool position with assignment to a home unit on the first day of orientation — potential units include: Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, Med/Surg Oncology, Clinical Decision Unit, Orthopedics, and MS/Ortho/Urology
- Located within a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center with a Level III NICU
- Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neurological, oncology, orthopedic, urology, ENT, and general med/surg cases
- Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit assignment
- Telemetry is monitored by telemetry techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
- Skills required vary by unit and may include wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, central line blood draws, trach care, PEG tubes, ostomy care, colostomy, C-collar, abdominal binders, restraints, wound vacs, PCA pumps, and hemovac/JP drain management
- Chemo administration experience is highly preferred for the Med/Surg Oncology unit; certification required to administer
- EMR: Cerner (preferred); IV pumps: Plum 360; medication dispensing: Omnicell; monitors: Spacelabs
- 12-hour day and night shifts available (7:00 AM–7:00 PM or 7:00 PM–7:00 AM)
- 36 hours per week standard with potential for 48
- Every other weekend rotation required, or approximately 4 weekend days per month
- No on-call requirements
- Floating may occur to like units (e.g., MS to MS, MS to ICU tasks, MS to ER/MS holds)
- Scheduling follows a 4-week cycle using Smart Square; no self-scheduling
Requirements
- Active AL RN license or compact RN license required (may submit pending, with ETA provided)
- Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 18 months of experience in Med/Surg and/or ICU required
- Epic or Cerner EMR experience required; Cerner required if experience is strictly ICU
- At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience required for Trauma Surgical unit consideration
- Telemetry interpretation experience is a plus — candidates with tele experience should provide details
- Must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
- SSN, DOB (day and month), copy of certifications, and 1 reference from a charge nurse or above within the past 12 months required for consideration
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply, provided minimum experience requirements are met
- Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked) before being eligible to return as a traveler
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 for VS, ADLs, and glucose checks), HUC/receptionist, charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalist, and telemetry monitoring techs
- New travelers to the facility or those returning after 1+ year away will complete 24 hours of classroom orientation followed by 24 hours of on-unit orientation; orientation for recent rehires will vary
- Interviews are conducted via SimpliFi
- Holiday coverage is expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy; specific holiday scheduling is not guaranteed in advance
- Requests for time off during high-demand periods (including Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Valentine's Day week, entire month of March, Easter weekend, Mother's Day weekend, Memorial Day week, Father's Day weekend, Fourth of July, Labor Day weekend, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas/New Year's) require NM/EANH approval
- Up to 7 days of RTO may be pre-approved on the candidate's behalf, excluding blackout dates
- No scrub color restrictions
- Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
