Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Level II Trauma Center ICU position requiring neuro and trauma experience with a compact or Maine RN license.
Details
- Night shift schedule: 7PM–7AM, 12-hour shifts, 48 hours per week
- 26-bed Intensive Care Unit within a 411-bed Level II Trauma Center (air transport receiving facility)
- Patient population includes Medical, Surgical, Trauma, Neuro, Ortho, and Interventional ICU patients, including DKA and multi-system trauma cases
- Specialized procedures include ICP monitoring, external ventricular drain (EVD) management, spinal precautions, hemodynamic line management, arterial lines, chest tubes, and management of critical care drips
- Patient ratio is 1:2 based on acuity (a 3rd patient may be assigned temporarily during discharge or transfer)
- Charting system: Cerner (experience preferred)
- Equipment used includes BD Alaris IV pumps and Pyxis medication dispensing system
- Every other weekend rotation required (Night shift: Friday and Saturday)
- Floating may be required to the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU/PCU) or PICU for those with pediatric experience, within scope of practice
Requirements
- Active compact or Maine (ME) RN license required
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of ICU experience required
- Neuro and trauma ICU experience is required
- Proficiency with ventilator management, critical care drips, hemodynamic monitoring, A-lines, chest tubes, rhythm recognition, and strong assessment skills required
- COVID-19 and influenza vaccinations required for employment eligibility
- Must not have previously worked as permanent staff at any Northern Light Health facility within the past 3 years
- Permanent address must be 100+ miles south/southwest of the facility in Bangor, ME (candidates residing in Maine are not eligible)
- Two professional references within the past year required; at least one must be from a supervisor, manager, or director (charge nurse acceptable; peer references not accepted)
- Copies of all current certifications required for consideration
- Full SSN, driver's license, and all RTO requests required at time of consideration
Additional Information
- Fast-paced environment requiring strong multitasking, prioritization, and the ability to remain calm under pressure — patients may be transported out and return within 90 minutes
- Teamwork and punctuality are essential in this unit
- Orientation consists of general hospital orientation followed by 1 day of unit-specific orientation
- Support staff include RT 24/7, PT/OT Monday–Friday, hospitalist in-house 24/7, intensivist available 24/7 for consult, trauma surgery team, unassigned charge nurse, and a house resource nurse (ICU-level) 24/7
- Holiday time-off requests require special approval; excessive RTO requests are discouraged, and a full week off may need to be added to the end of the contract
- Scrubs may be any color but must appear professional
