Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and proficiency in Epic or Cerner.

Details

  • Float pool position covering multiple Med/Surg units within the facility, with a home unit assigned on the first day of orientation
  • Units covered include: Trauma Surgical (6 North), Neuroscience (5 South), Med/Surg Oncology (5 North), Clinical Decision Unit (4 South), Orthopedics (3 South), and MS/Ortho/Urology (3 North)
  • Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neurological, oncology, orthopedic, urology, ENT, and general Med/Surg cases such as COPD, CHF, sepsis, and end-of-life care
  • Patient ratios are typically 1:5–6 depending on unit assignment
  • Procedures and skills utilized across units include wound care, chest tubes, trach care, PEG/NGT tubes, IV starts, blood draws from central lines, ostomy care, foley care, PCA pumps, and restraints
  • Telemetry is monitored by Telemetry Techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • Chemo administration experience is highly preferred for the 5 North Med/Surg Oncology unit; administration requires certification
  • EMR: Cerner (preferred); IV pumps: Plum 360; Medication dispensing: Omnicell; Monitors: Spacelabs
  • 12-hour day shifts, 7:00 AM–7:00 PM, 36 hours per week with potential for 48-hour weeks
  • Weekend rotation: every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating required to like units (e.g., MS to MS, MS to ICU tasks, MS to ER holds)

Requirements

  • Active AL RN license or compact RN license required
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required
  • Epic or Cerner EMR experience required; Cerner required if experience is exclusively ICU
  • Trauma/surgical unit experience of at least 1 year required for Trauma Surgical unit assignment
  • Proficiency in telemetry strip interpretation required
  • SSN, DOB (day and month), one reference from a charge nurse or above from the past 12 months, and copies of certifications required for consideration
  • Must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible

Additional Information

  • This is a Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center with 492 beds, a Level III NICU, and a full support team including charge nurses, CNAs (1:6 ratio), HUCs, hospitalists, phlebotomy, and IV/VAT teams
  • Unit support includes CNA assistance with vitals, ADLs, and glucose checks, as well as telemetry monitoring techs
  • Orientation consists of 24 hours of classroom time followed by 24 hours on the unit for new and returning travelers absent for 1+ year
  • Scheduling follows a 4-week cycle using Smart Square; self-scheduling is not available
  • Holiday coverage is required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy
  • Specific blackout dates require manager approval for any time-off requests
  • Scrubs may be any color
  • Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
  • Interviews are conducted via SimpliFi
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply with the required experience
  • Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked) before being eligible to return as a traveler
