Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry night shift position at a Level 4 Trauma, Critical Access acute care hospital in Michigan.
Details
- Acute care Med/Surg Telemetry unit with 24 inpatient beds and up to 10 observation/day surgery patients
- Common diagnoses include NHP, cellulitis, UTI, COPD, GU, pacemaker, sepsis, nursing home placements, and day surgical cases including orthopedic (hips and knees), cholecystectomies, appendectomies, and TURP-CBI
- Nurse-to-patient ratios are 5:1 on day shift and 6:1 at 11pm; team nursing with LPNs follows a 2:7 ratio
- Travelers may occasionally be assigned a small pediatric population only if they have prior pediatric experience or no other coverage options are available
- Telemetry strip reading is performed in the ICU daily; basic arrhythmia knowledge required as a physical monitor is located at the nurses' station — RNs are not required to read their own strips independently
- Drip titration is not required
- Hospitalist on-site until 6pm daily, with telehealth coverage overnight; RT available 24/7 and oversees the entire hospital
- Cerner EMR currently in use with a transition to Epic underway
- 12-hour night shifts (7pm–7am)
- Rotating weekend requirement: every other weekend, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
- Holiday coverage required for 2 out of 3 assigned holidays
- On-call/standby assignment is a possibility
- Floating to like units and similar patient populations is required
Requirements
- Active MI RN license required by start date
- Current BLS certification (AHA) required; ACLS preferred
- Minimum 1 year of Med/Surg or Med/Surg Telemetry experience in an acute care setting
- Experience with TURP-CBI preferred
- Critical Access or Trauma Level 3 or 4 experience preferred
- Must be proficient with IV starts, as no IV team is on-site
- Basic telemetry arrhythmia interpretation knowledge required
- Two professional references required: one from a supervisor within the last 12 months of relevant experience, and one from a peer or supervisor within the last 3 years in the same specialty
- Former permanent staff at this facility must have an end date at least 6 months prior to their application date, and hospital approval is required
Additional Information
- Travelers may be placed as relief charge nurse; charge nurses carry a patient assignment
- Nurse aides are present on the unit
- Orientation consists of an 8-hour computer education day, followed by a 4-hour shadow, a full 12-hour orientation shift, and then independent practice
- Scheduling is self-directed when possible; longer blocks of shifts (approximately 6 at a time) are preferred, though consecutive scheduling cannot be guaranteed
- Candidates living within 80 miles of the facility are considered local, which affects the travel pay rate
- Solid, professional scrub colors required; no specific color designated
- BSN is not required for this position
