Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Oncology unit position requiring a minimum of 2 years of Med/Surg experience and the ability to administer chemotherapy on night shifts.

Details

  • Inpatient Medical/Surgical unit with a primarily Med/Surg patient population with oncology history
  • Patient diagnoses include AKI, sepsis, cancer, septic shock, pain, overdose, malignant neoplasms, ARF, encephalopathy, FTT, diabetic foot ulcers, and heparin drips
  • Administration of chemotherapy and biotherapy via IV, PO, or injection is performed on this unit
  • Target patient ratio of 1:6, though ratios may increase during periods of high census (unit daily census of 42)
  • Night shift schedule: 3x12-hour shifts (18:45–07:15)
  • 13-week contracts accepted, with the option to extend
  • Every other weekend is required
  • On-call is required if called off on a pre-scheduled shift; called-out shifts must be made up
  • Floating required to similar units and alternate care locations, including inpatient holding in the ED or other medical patient care areas
  • EMR: Epic; Medication system: Pyxis
  • Contract staff may be assigned to a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team and may be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty incidents, or disasters

Requirements

  • Active NC or Compact RN license required (may be pending at time of consideration)
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Oncology certification (ONS/ONCC) preferred; must be willing to administer chemotherapy if needed
  • Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg RN experience required (hard requirement)
  • Oncology nursing experience preferred
  • Required skills: colostomy care, port access, blood product administration, central line blood draws, peripheral line care/management, PICC line management, heparin and insulin administration, surgical drains, chest tube management (Emerson/Pleur-evac), nasal cannula/non-invasive airway management, isolation precautions, and wound care/wound vac
  • Must be able to perform cardiac monitoring, interpret and manage dysrhythmias, and demonstrate emergency response skills
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start
  • Preferred: CPI certification, charge nurse experience, and OCN certification
  • Two manager/supervisor references from within the past 2 years required (may be pending at time of consideration)

Additional Information

  • Orientation consists of 24 hours (2 shifts) on a weekly schedule
  • Pre-start online modules are required (approximately 8–10 hours for acute care roles) and must also be completed annually
  • Navy blue and white scrubs are required
  • Attendance at monthly staff meetings is expected
  • Candidates must work 2 out of 3 major holidays; RTO is not permitted during the first week of the assignment and cannot be requested after signing
  • Up to 7 days of RTO may be auto-approved as long as it does not fall on a holiday; additional RTO requires facility approval
  • Candidates who previously worked at this health system (Novant Health or New Hanover) in any capacity must wait 12 months before applying; prior employment must be disclosed, and facility rehire approval is required
  • Local candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility are accepted at a lower rate
  • Travel pairs are permitted, provided each clinician is on a different unit and each has independent transportation and scheduling flexibility
