Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Women's Medicine Unit (Med/Surg) position requiring at least 2 years of experience and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, growing unit.
Details
- Women's Medicine Unit (WMU) in a hospital setting with 48 private rooms, including three negative pressure rooms
- Patient population is female or identifies as female, age 18 and older
- Common diagnoses include acute respiratory failure, CHF exacerbation, AMS, falls, failure to thrive, SBO, cancer-related diagnoses, sepsis, GI bleed, ascites, anemia, AKI, sickle cell crisis, and end-of-life/hospice care
- Patient ratios are 4:1 to 5:1
- Clinical technicians are available with a ratio of approximately 8:1 to 10:1, and a unit secretary is also on the unit
- Telemetry monitoring and continuous pulse oximetry are used; patients are monitored remotely 24/7 at a central station and on the floor via Bedboard for strip reading and submission
- Drips include Heparin (with titration) and cardiac and insulin drips (no titration)
- Respiratory equipment used includes high-flow oxygen, CPAP, and BiPAP
- Hospitalist coverage is available in-house 24/7
- Respiratory therapy and pharmacy support are both available 24/7
- IV team is available for midline and PICC line placement only; clinical techs and RNs start IVs and draw blood on the unit
- EMR is Epic
- Shift is 7p–7a, 12-hour nights (36 hours/week)
- Weekend requirement is 4 weekend shifts per every 6 weeks; night shift weekend shifts include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights
- Self-scheduling and block scheduling are both available options
- No on-call requirements
- May float to other Med/Surg units
Requirements
- Active VA or Compact RN license required
- Current BLS certification required
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Med/Surg experience required
- Epic EMR experience strongly recommended given unit environment
- Must pass an ECG exam (administered on day 2 of assignment; study guide and a study session with the clinical team are provided prior to start)
- Ability to work independently with strong clinical judgment and critical thinking skills
- Experience with precepting and/or charge nurse responsibilities highly preferred
Additional Information
- The unit recently expanded from 30 to 48 beds and is in a growth phase, with many newer nurses currently in orientation — highly experienced RNs who can function independently and support a less experienced team are strongly preferred
- Travelers may be relied upon as informal clinical leaders, resources, and guides for less experienced staff
- Two charge RNs are on the unit; the main charge manages the bedboard and assignments while the second charge serves as a resource and rounder (and may take patients when staffing is tight)
- Orientation consists of three shifts on the unit with a preceptor
- Holiday rotation is shared with staff
- Navy blue scrubs are required
