Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position requiring at least 2 years of experience, EKG competency, and the ability to work nights with rotating weekend coverage.

Details

  • Hospital-based Med/Surg Telemetry unit
  • Patient population includes diabetes, dementia, COVID, pneumonia, COPD, sepsis, encephalopathy, GI bleed, anemia, hip fracture, CHF, UTI, surgical recovery, renal failure, hypertension, cellulitis, and failure to thrive
  • Patient ratio of 1:6
  • Night shift: 18:45–07:15 (4x12-hour shifts)
  • Every other weekend required
  • Floating may be required to main campus approximately 32 minutes away
  • No on-call requirement
  • Self-scheduling
  • Contract staff may be assigned to a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team and required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty incidents, or disasters
  • Contracts of 13–20 weeks accepted; 36 or 48 hours per week available
  • Uses Pyxis for medication management

Requirements

  • Active NC or Compact RN license required (may be pending at time of consideration)
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant RN experience required
  • Proficiency in telemetry including remote monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management
  • Experience with bowel obstruction, colostomy/ileostomy management, feeding tube care, hemodialysis management, and renal failure
  • IV and vascular access skills required: peripheral line care, central line blood draw, PICC line management, phlebotomy, and starting/maintaining IVs
  • Medication administration experience required: heparin, insulin, and PCA
  • Respiratory management skills required: BiPAP/CPAP, high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC), nasal cannula, non-invasive airway management, oral suctioning, and oxygen administration
  • Experience with chest tubes (Emerson/PleurEvac), wound care, and wound vac required
  • Isolation precautions/PPE experience required
  • Must be able to work holidays
  • Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 2 years required (pending at time of consideration is acceptable)

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Local candidates are accepted; candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility are eligible at a reduced rate
  • Must pass an EKG test prior to start
  • Orientation is approximately 24 hours; weekly orientation format
  • Pre-start modules are required (approximately 8–10 hours for acute care roles); modules must also be completed annually
  • RTO is limited to 7 days maximum per contract and may not be taken during the first week of assignment due to orientation; RTO may not fall on a holiday without facility approval
  • Candidates must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • Previous permanent, PRN, or EP employees of Novant Health or New Hanover Regional Medical Center must have a 12-month gap before applying as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
  • Travel pairs are allowed, but each traveler must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
  • Preferred skills include ACLS, on-unit telemetry monitoring, post-angiogram care, post-cardiac surgery, post-MI, IV insulin protocols, bariatric surgery, CBI, port access/management, CVA, substance withdrawal, surgical drains, ABG interpretation, pre/post thoracic surgery, tracheostomy care, charge nurse experience, and community hospital experience
