Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Pediatric ICU (PICU) position at an acute care children's hospital in West Virginia, requiring a minimum of 2 years of PICU experience and comfort with adult patients.
Details
- 20-bed PICU within an acute care children's hospital setting
- Average daily census of approximately 15 patients
- Patient population includes congenital heart disease, DKA, respiratory illness, neurosurgery, tracheostomies, ventilator-dependent patients, and G-tube patients; adult patients may also be assigned
- ICU ratios are 1:1–2; stepdown ratios are 1:3
- RNs are required to titrate drips, including sedation protocols (Fentanyl, Versed, Precedex) and vasoactive drugs per physician orders
- TPN and maintenance IV fluids are also administered
- Telemetry is monitored off-unit; all patients are on monitors with central monitoring at the ICU and stepdown desks
- Ventilators, CPAP, and BiPAP are in use and managed by respiratory therapy
- Epic EMR is used on this unit
- 12-hour shifts, rotating days and nights (7a–7p / 7p–7a), three shifts per week
- 2 full weekends required per 4-week schedule (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are all considered weekend shifts)
- Holiday coverage is required and travelers are incorporated into the permanent staff holiday rotation
- No on-call or standby requirement
- Floating within the children's hospital is required, including to L&D, NICU, and Acute Peds at normal unit ratios
- Self-scheduling is available with the possibility of block scheduling based on unit needs
Requirements
- WV RN license or compact RN license required
- Current BLS and PALS certifications required
- Minimum 2 years of PICU experience required — this is a hard requirement
- Comfort and willingness to take adult patients is required
- Epic EMR experience preferred
- COVID-19 vaccination required; medical or religious exemptions may be requested
Additional Information
- Unit is staffed with at least one nursing aide during the day and one at night; aide duties include feeding, fingerstick blood glucose checks, and assisting RNs with equipment and bed preparation
- Charge nurse coverage is provided and the house supervisor is available 24/7; free charge is the goal when staffing allows
- A pediatrician, resident, and APP are in-house 24/7 with a call room on the unit
- Orientation includes Epic training, nursing skills orientation (NSO), competency and equipment review with a clinical preceptor, and 3 mentored shifts in the PICU
- Scrub color is dark gray (pewter)
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
- Any candidate who has previously worked at a WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before being considered
- Travelers who have worked within the WVU system for a cumulative year must also take a 2-year break before returning
- Two professional references are required for consideration: one supervisor reference and one peer or additional supervisor reference
- A skills checklist completed within the past year is required for consideration
- Copies of current certifications and a valid driver's license are required for consideration
