Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced ICU RN for a 13-week night shift travel contract at a Level 1 Trauma Center in Chandler, AZ, requiring a minimum of 3 years of recent ICU experience including neuro or CV background.

- Acute care hospital setting at a Level 1 Trauma Center
- Placement is within the ICU department, which includes a Surgical ICU (Trauma/Neuro/Surgery), a 36-bed Medical Cardiac ICU, and a 12-bed overflow ICU — travelers are expected to float between all three ICUs
- Surgical ICU patient population includes Level 1 trauma (falls, GSW, blunt trauma, MVAs) for patients 15+, as well as ex-lap, craniotomy, specialty neurosurgery, CVA, status post-TPA, COVID, sepsis, and ARDS
- Medical Cardiac ICU patient population includes sepsis, COVID, CRRT, DKA, flu, ARDS, vascular surgeries, CABG recovery, valve surgeries, post-cath, TAVR, IABP, Impella, ECMO, Tandem heart, and esophagectomies
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:2 or 1:1
- RNs are required to titrate drips; common drips include propofol, fentanyl, versed, precedex, morphine, dilaudid, ketamine, rocuronium, levophed, vasopressin, cardene, labetalol, dopamine, dobutamine, heparin, and insulin
- Ventilator and respiratory equipment in use includes Draeger, Hamilton, Puritan Bennett 840, V60 BiPAP, and Airvo
- No monitor techs on unit — RNs are required to interpret their own cardiac strips using GE monitors
- Charting is done in Cerner
- 12-hour night shifts
- Weekend requirement is 3 shifts per 4-week schedule; night shift weekends are Friday–Saturday
- Self-scheduling with manager balancing as needed for unit needs
- May float to a telemetry unit with a 1:3 or 1:4 ratio as needed; may also float to sister facility Mercy Gilbert
- No additional on-call or standby shifts required
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active AZ RN license or Compact (NLC) RN license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses are not accepted
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required — pending certifications are not accepted
- Minimum 3 years of recent ICU experience required with no exceptions; at least 2 of those years must be in the ICU
- ICU experience must include either neuro or cardiovascular (CV) background
- Must pass the Relias Dysrhythmia exam prior to offer confirmation — maximum of 2 attempts allowed
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility (permanent address as indicated on driver's license)
- Candidates must not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI and/or Dignity, within the past year (candidates employed PRN through outside firms will be considered)
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- Copy of driver's license required for consideration
Additional Information
- Charge nurses are present on the unit and do not take patients; intensivists and respiratory therapy are available in the ICU 24/7
- No nurse aides on the unit — CNAs are used only as sitters or Health Unit Secretaries
- A pass/fail Simulation Lab assessment covering sterile technique (Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes) is conducted on Day 1 of orientation
- Unit-specific orientation is 1–2 days; skills validation for trauma, neuro, and specialty devices will be conducted as needed
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply, provided they meet the 3-year experience requirement (with at least 2 years in the ICU)
- Level 1 Trauma or neuro experience is not required but is preferred; prior experience at a similarly sized ICU is also preferred
- One holiday off is permitted per assignment
- Navy scrubs required
