Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a 13-week Med/Surg assignment at an acute care hospital in Wheeling, WV, requiring 2 years of experience and a WV or compact RN license.
Details
- 52-bed Med/Surg unit with all private rooms in an acute care hospital setting
- Patient population includes ortho post-ops, neuro post-ops (laminectomies, discectomies, spinal fusions), general post-ops, and medical diagnoses such as COPD, pneumonia, and cellulitis; hemodialysis is also performed on this floor
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:6-7 (predominantly 1:7 on both day and night shifts); CNA support with ratios of 1:10-12 (typically 4-6 CNAs per shift)
- Common drips include heparin, PCAs with MSO4, and occasional Ativan gtts; no cardiac drips or continuous insulin drips
- Respiratory support includes intermittent BiPAP, CPAP, and high-flow oxygen
- Remote telemetry monitoring available as needed, monitored on a separate unit; RNs are not required to read strips but may do so if experienced
- IV Team handles all IV starts 24/7; RNs assess IV sites only; PICC team also available
- Hospitalist, intensivist, respiratory therapy, and pharmacy (Pyxis) all available in-house 24/7
- Charting system: Allscripts (also referenced as Sunrise)
- 12-hour day shifts, 0645–1915
- Every-other-weekend requirement (3 weekends out of a 6-week schedule); days: Sat/Sun
- Holiday rotation coverage required
- Floating possible to other Med/Surg and Med/Surg Oncology units; may float to IMC but only for Med/Surg overflow with no drips
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active WV or compact RN license required
- Current BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required; ACLS is a plus
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Experience with peritoneal dialysis is highly preferred
- Valid, unexpired driver's license required for consideration
- Any licensing disciplinary history must be disclosed upfront
Additional Information
- Orientation consists of a general hospital orientation followed by 2 full shifts on the unit
- Charge nurse carries a full patient assignment and is supported by a Clinical Assistant 40 hrs/week
- Schedules are made 6 weeks at a time; staff may submit up to 6 time-off requests per 6-week schedule
- RN scrub dress code: navy blue top and bottom with navy scrub jacket; no hoodies
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
- Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a minimum 2-year break before reapplying
- Cumulative travel experience at WVU facilities is tracked; travelers who reach one year of total WVU experience must take a 2-year break before returning
- Two supervisor/peer references required, including at least one supervisor reference; if the candidate worked a permanent position within the last 12 months, one reference must be from that employer
- Work history covering the past 7 years (or from graduation, whichever is less) is required, with no gaps greater than 30 days
- A skills checklist completed within the past year is required
