Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a fast-paced Telemetry unit, requiring a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience and ACLS/BCLS/NIH certifications, with night shift availability.

Details

  • Hospital telemetry unit serving as the primary cardiac and stroke unit
  • Patient population includes stable pre/post care for pacemaker implantation, implanted cardioverter/defibrillators (ICD), cardiac catheterization, TR bands, post uncomplicated interventional peripheral vascular procedures, unstable angina, low-risk chest pain, CHF, dysrhythmias, new CVA, and TIA patients
  • Unit also houses COVID-positive patients managed with opti-flow and BiPAP during surge periods
  • Target nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5–6; travelers must be comfortable managing up to 6 patients during surge
  • Unit turns over approximately 78–90 patients per week, requiring nurses to manage high admission and discharge volumes
  • Cardiac drip management required, including Cardizem, Dopamine, Amiodarone, and other vasoactive drips
  • Special equipment includes telemetry monitors, pulse oximetry, high-flow O2, non-rebreather masks, and BiPAP (chronic use only)
  • EMR: Epic (Dimensions); medication dispensing via Pyxis; communication framework: SBAR
  • Night shift: 3x12-hour shifts, 18:45–07:15
  • Every other weekend required, along with 2 Mondays and 2 Fridays per 6-week scheduling period
  • On-call required; frequency depends on patient census
  • Floating is required
  • Self-scheduling with leadership oversight; block scheduling is not permitted
  • Contract length: 13–26 weeks

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required; license and certifications may be pending at time of consideration
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant RN experience required
  • Telemetry and cardiac nursing experience required, including IV starts, cardiac drips, and pre/post procedure care
  • Experience with PCI patients required
  • Must be comfortable with high-acuity, fast-paced unit environments with a 1:5–6 patient ratio
  • Must pass an EKG competency test prior to start
  • Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 2 years are strongly preferred; references must be on file prior to start
  • Previous permanent, PRN, or employed staff of Novant Health or New Hanover must wait 12 months before being considered as a traveler

Additional Information

  • Responsibilities include telemetry monitoring, titrating cardiac drips (e.g., Cardizem, Dopamine, Amiodarone), and managing high-acuity cardiac and stroke patients
  • A team lead is available on the unit to assist with admissions and discharges
  • Orientation is 36 hours; travelers must be available every day during week one for hospital orientation
  • 8–10 hours of online modules must be completed prior to start
  • Candidates must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • No time off (RTO) is permitted during the first week of the assignment due to orientation; RTO requests after booking must be approved and cannot be arranged directly on-site
  • Scrub color requirement: navy blue or white scrubs, or a combination of both; Novant t-shirts permitted; jackets must match uniform color and material (no fleece); no Crocs with holes
  • Travel pairs are permitted; each traveler must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
  • Candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility are accepted
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Contract extensions beyond 13 weeks are available; candidates interested in a 36- or 48-hour weekly schedule should indicate their preference
