Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PCU Float position at a Level I Trauma, Magnet-designated acute care teaching hospital, requiring Epic proficiency and comfort floating across all PCU and Med/Surg units.

Details

  • Float position covering all PCU and Med/Surg (MS) units within a large 703-bed acute care teaching hospital
  • Level I Trauma Center (Adult & Pediatric), Magnet-designated facility affiliated with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
  • Certified Advanced Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Center with advanced specialty care services
  • Night shift schedule: 4x12-hour shifts (6:45 PM – 7:15 AM)
  • PCU patient ratio averages 5:1; MS patient ratio averages 6:1, with potential flex up to 7:1
  • Staffing needs are re-evaluated every 4 hours, meaning travelers may float 2–3 times per shift
  • Weekend requirement: every other weekend (EOW) or 6 weekend shifts per 6-week scheduling block
  • One holiday shift required per 13-week contract
  • Epic EMR experience required

Requirements

  • Active Virginia state RN license or Compact RN license required; pending licensure accepted only for candidates holding a single-state license from a non-compact state
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
  • Minimum 1–2 years of telemetry and stepdown-level experience (PCU, DOU, or IMC) required
  • Cardiovascular experience in pre/post cardiac cath settings required
  • Proficiency in cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, and titrating cardiac drips
  • Experience with IV therapy, phlebotomy, and blood product administration
  • Skilled in central line care, trach management, and non-invasive airway support (nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP)
  • Experience with chest tube management (Emerson/PleurEvac systems)
  • Ability to manage PCA and heparin protocols, administer IV insulin, and handle endocrine/metabolic conditions
  • Must be comfortable working across all PCU and Med/Surg units
  • Valid driver's license and Social Security card required for consideration

  • Provide stepdown and progressive care nursing across multiple units, including rapid response and code team participation
  • Two professional references required for consideration
