Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro ICU position at a comprehensive stroke center, requiring a minimum of 2 years of Neuro ICU experience and an active NC or compact RN license.

Details

  • Neuro ICU setting within a comprehensive stroke center
  • Patient population includes ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes (SAH), SDH, craniotomies, carotid stents, carotid endarterectomies, aneurysm coiling/clipping, seizures, depth electrodes, and myasthenia gravis — stroke patients represent the largest patient population
  • Drains used include EVDs, lumbar drains, hemovacs, and Camino ICP monitoring
  • Specialized equipment includes EVD, lumbar drains, Camino, LICOX, NICOM, and Arctic Sun
  • Patient ratio is 2:1, with the ability to flex up to 3:1 during high census
  • Average daily census is 11–12 patients
  • EMR: Epic (also uses Pyxis and SBAR communication)
  • Night shift: 12-hour shifts, 18:45–07:15 (3x12)
  • Every other weekend required
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating required
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required (may be pending at time of consideration)
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Minimum 2 years of Neuro ICU experience required — strong neuro critical care background specifically, not general ICU
  • Required skills: ventilator management, IV starts, interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, blood product administration, central line care/management, continuous IV sedation, CVA/acute stroke management, EVD and ICP monitoring, post-neurosurgery management, care of ventilated patients, isolation precautions/PPE, and lumbar drain experience
  • Preferred skills: arterial line management
  • Must pass an EKG test prior to start
  • Two manager/supervisor references from within the past 12 months are highly preferred; references are required by start date

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
  • Previously employed permanent, PRN, or EP staff of Novant Health or New Hanover must wait 12 months before being considered as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
  • Local candidates within 50 miles of the facility are accepted
  • No RTO is permitted during the first week of the assignment due to orientation; up to 7 days of RTO may be approved as long as it does not fall on a holiday — additional RTO requires facility approval and call-offs or excessive RTO may result in contract cancellation
  • Candidate must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • Orientation is 24 hours (2 days or 2 nights); weekly orientation schedule
  • Pre-start modules of approximately 8–10 hours are required and must also be completed annually
  • Scrub colors: navy blue and white
  • Travel pairs are allowed; each traveler must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
  • Contracts of longer than 13 weeks may be available for interested candidates
