Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for an Intermediate Care (IMC) position specializing in neurological and medical intermediate patients, requiring a minimum of 2 years of experience and the ability to titrate vasoactive drips including Levophed.
Details
- Intermediate Care Unit (IMC) in a hospital setting, sub-specialized in neurological and medical intermediate patient populations
- Patient diagnoses include aneurysms, craniotomy, CVA, intracranial bleeds, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, seizure disorders, post-TPA care, pre/post neurosurgery, substance withdrawal, and lumbar drain management
- Patient ratio of 1:4 with a maximum unit census of 24 patients
- 12-hour day shifts, 06:45–19:15 (3x12), with the option for 36 or 48 hours per week
- Floating may be required to other intermediate areas (6A, 5A PCTU, 5C Cardiac Intermediate) and critical care (ICU/Stepdown)
- A minimum of 3 weekend shifts every six weeks is required
- No on-call requirements
- EMR: Epic (experience required); also uses Pyxis and SBAR communication framework
- Contract length is 13 weeks minimum, with extensions up to 26 weeks available
Requirements
- Active RN license in NC or a compact state (may be pending at time of consideration)
- Active BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications (may be pending at time of consideration)
- Minimum 2 years of relevant RN experience required
- Neuro stepdown, PCU/DOU/IMC/stepdown, and telemetry setting experience required
- Neuro experience strongly preferred; candidates with limited neuro experience may still be considered
- Epic EMR experience required
- Cardiac monitoring skills required: interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, telemetry monitoring, and rapid response/code team utilization
- Cardiovascular skills required: TR Band
- Endocrine/metabolic skills required: IV insulin protocols and titration of insulin drips
- Respiratory skills required: BiPAP/CPAP management, care of ventilated patients, chest tubes (Emerson/PleurEvac), HFNC, ABG interpretation, tracheostomy care, and non-invasive airway management
- IV therapy skills required: blood product administration, central line care/management, PICC line management, peripheral line care/management, and starting/maintaining IVs
- Medication skills required: Heparin protocols, PCA, thrombolytic agents, titration of cardiac and vasoactive drips, and ability to titrate Levophed (LEVO)
- GI skills required: feeding tube care and management
- GU/Renal skills required: continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) and pre/post hemodialysis management
- Additional required skills: surgical drain management, wound care/wound vac, and isolation precautions/PPE
- Must pass an EKG test prior to start
- First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
Additional Information
- Orientation consists of 32 hours total: an 8-hour computer class plus two on-unit shifts following initial hospital orientation; no RTO is permitted during the first week of the assignment due to orientation
- 8–10 hours of pre-start modules are required and must also be completed annually
- Preferred certifications include CCRN, TNCC, and CPI
- Preferred skills include port access/management, phlebotomy, triage, ICP monitoring, conscious sedation, and charge nurse experience
- Candidates must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
- RTO of 7 days or fewer may be auto-approved as long as it does not fall on a holiday; requests exceeding 7 days require facility approval; RTO is not permitted to be worked out onsite after booking
- Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 12 months are highly preferred; references must be on file prior to start
- Former permanent, PRN, or EP staff of Novant Health or New Hanover Regional Medical Center must wait 12 months before being considered as a traveler, and facility rehire approval is required
- Local candidates are accepted; candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility are eligible at a different rate
- Travel pairs are permitted, provided each candidate has their own transportation and is comfortable with potentially different schedules
- Scrubs are not provided; any combination of navy blue and white is required
- An interview with the manager is required prior to any offer being extended
