Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring a minimum of 2 years of experience, telemetry skills, and night shift availability.

Details

  • Mixed acuity PCU/Med-Surg Telemetry unit with 48 total beds
  • Patient population includes COPD exacerbations, pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, COVID-19, influenza, PE, and patients with chest tubes, CPAP/BiPAP, and multiple comorbidities
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4–5, with potential for 1:6 in extreme situations; no nurse is assigned more than one ventilator patient at a time
  • Ventilators on unit are used for chronic trach/vent patients
  • Special equipment includes chest tubes, vents, trachs, CPAP/BiPAP, and IV drips (Dopamine, Cardizem, Heparin)
  • EMR: Epic (experience required); also uses Pyxis and SBAR communication
  • 12-hour night shifts, 18:45–07:15 (3x12), with every other weekend required
  • Float to like units required
  • Block scheduling can be accommodated when unit needs are met

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required; license may be pending at time of consideration
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; certifications may be pending at time of consideration
  • NIHSS certification preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant RN experience required
  • Proficiency in IV starts, mechanical ventilation, CPAP/BiPAP, telemetry monitoring, and dysrhythmia interpretation and management
  • Must pass an EKG competency test prior to start
  • Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 2 years required prior to start (pending at time of consideration is acceptable)

Additional Information

  • On-unit support resources include a team lead with a 3:1 ratio rounding the full unit, 2 rounding respiratory therapists, an assistant nurse manager (including weekends), an admission/discharge nurse, a vascular access team, RRT, code team, and behavioral health team
  • CNAs are assigned at a 9–10:1 ratio
  • Orientation is 24 hours; orientation begins on a weekly basis and no RTO is permitted during the first week
  • 8–10 hours of pre-start online modules are required for acute care roles and must be completed annually
  • Candidates must be prepared to work 2 out of 3 major holidays; RTO cannot fall on holidays
  • Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved; additional RTO requires facility approval and is not guaranteed — call-offs or excess RTO could result in contract cancellation
  • Previous permanent, PRN, or EP staff of this health system must wait 12 months before being considered as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
  • Local candidates are accepted; candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility may be subject to a different pay rate
  • Travel pairs are allowed provided each traveler has their own transportation and is comfortable with potentially different schedules
  • Scrubs are not provided; white or navy blue scrubs required
  • First-time travelers will be considered for this position
