Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for an off-campus Emergency Department position in the Tacoma, WA area, requiring a minimum of 2 years of true ER experience and certifications including BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, NIHSS, and TNCC.
Details
- Off-campus emergency department (OCED) setting with 10 ED beds and up to 20 total treatment spaces per location
- Patient population spans neonates to geriatrics, with approximately 25% pediatrics, walk-in traumas, and a wide range of acuities including cardiac, neuro, GI, respiratory, psych, and GSW patients
- Patient ratio is 1:4, with fast track team nurse ratio of 1:6
- 12-hour night shifts with variable start times between 1500 and 1900
- Weekend rotation attempted every other weekend, though not guaranteed; negotiable
- 6-week scheduling cycles; block scheduling is not guaranteed
- Travelers will be assigned a primary OCED location but are expected to float to other OCED sites as needed, including mid-shift floating
- Epic EMR, Alaris infusion pumps, and Pyxis medication dispensing systems are used
- No respiratory therapists on-site — RNs manage ventilators and BiPAP independently
- No on-site pharmacy — RNs mix their own medications under remote pharmacy supervision via video conference
Requirements
- Active WA state RN license or compact RN license required
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, NIHSS, and TNCC
- Minimum 2 full years of true emergency department experience required (any trauma level)
- Strong IV skills required, including chest tube and central line experience
- Experience with medication administration including mixing medications
- Telemetry competency exam must be completed and passed prior to start
- One supervisor-level reference required for consideration; a second reference will be required prior to start (must be from charge nurse, manager, director, or above)
Additional Information
- Orientation includes one hospital orientation day, one full day with the OCED unit educator, an 8-hour respiratory/ventilator class, and one full day on the unit
- RNs will receive training on ventilator and BiPAP management during onboarding, as there are no respiratory therapists on-site
- Will be required to take charge nurse responsibilities; training provided if needed
- Unit support includes LPNs who can take low-acuity assignments and assist with procedures, a charge nurse with a partial patient assignment, and EST/phlebotomy support (though most blood draws are RN or LPN-performed)
- Scrubs may be any color
- Parking is free
- Holiday coverage expectations are negotiable
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- The facility accepts medical and religious exemption requests in lieu of certain vaccination requirements
- Housing near the Tacoma, Puyallup, Kent, or Renton area is recommended to avoid difficult I-5 traffic (for non-Bremerton locations); Bremerton-based travelers are advised to find housing in the peninsula near Bremerton, Silverdale, or Poulsbo
