Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Medical Surgical Oncology unit, requiring med/surg experience and telemetry skills, with hematology/oncology experience preferred.
Details
- Hospital-based Medical Surgical Oncology (Hematology/Oncology) unit
- Patient population includes lymphoma, multiple myeloma, acute and chronic leukemias, sickle cell disease, non-hematologic cancers, and benign hematology diagnoses
- Staffing ratio goal of 1:4, with a potential maximum of 1:5
- Day shift (3x12 hours, 7:00–19:30) and night shift (3x12 hours, 19:00–7:30) available
- Weekend scheduling is variable based on unit needs
- Self-scheduling system used — candidates submit preferred schedule before the final schedule is posted
- Floating required to other Med/Surg and Oncology units
- Special procedures include chemotherapy administration, blood transfusions, IV antibiotics, insulin drips, heparin drips, and management of oncologic emergencies (tumor lysis syndrome, cytokine release syndrome)
- Strong emphasis on infection prevention protocols and patient fall prevention
- Epic EMR used for charting
Requirements
- Active OH or compact RN license required
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Minimum med/surg experience required; hematology/oncology experience preferred but not required
- Telemetry experience required, including on-unit monitoring and interpretation of dysrhythmias
- Proficiency in IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, central line blood draws, peripheral and PICC line management, and starting IVs required
- Feeding tube care and management experience required
- Experience with Rapid Response Teams required
- Epic EMR experience required
- Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) certification preferred
- 2 professional references required: at least 1 from a Manager, Director, or Supervisor; a Charge RN is acceptable as the 2nd reference; co-worker references are not accepted
Additional Information
- First week of orientation is Monday–Friday on day shift; second week consists of 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor
- Candidates must complete Ohio state fingerprinting promptly after accepting an assignment — candidates outside Ohio but within driving distance will need to travel to an in-state fingerprinting location, while those farther away will receive a fingerprinting packet by mail
- Local candidates are accepted
- Former employees of this facility are eligible for a travel assignment after a minimum 6-month separation
- RTO must be submitted at the time of consideration and is limited to 7 days or fewer for the contract period
- Multiple paid parking permit options are available for agency staff near the medical center, including garage and surface lot options with varying levels of access

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.
Cons
Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
