Custer, SD
About
Known as the gateway to the Black Hills, Custer, South Dakota, is a small town with massive appeal. The city has a rich history dating back to the 1800s when gold was discovered in the area, leading to a gold rush. One of Custer’s primary claims to fame is Mount Rushmore National Monument, where stone statues of four of the nation’s greatest presidents forever enshrine their likenesses on the mountainside. Not far away, the not-yet-completed Crazy Horse Memorial dwarfs Mount Rushmore, stretching over 500 feet into the sky. Wind Cave National Park, the fourth longest cave in the world, is also in the Custer area. The city is also a popular tourist destination for those seeking to explore the great outdoors or browse quaint shops, art galleries and restaurants.
