Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PCU/HVU position requiring at least 1 year of PCU-specific experience, with 12-hour night shifts and cardiac procedural recovery skills.
Details
- Work in a 44-bed Heart and Vascular Unit (HVU) in a hospital setting
- Mixed-acuity unit covering Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and Med/Surg patient populations
- Patient types include direct admits, ED admits, and post-Cath Lab patients with conditions such as MI, NSTEMI, STEMI, CHF, dysrhythmias, pacemaker malfunction, and epicardial pacers
- Also serves as a backup Stroke unit and Medical Overflow unit
- Step-down level care for post-cardiac/vascular, post-cardiac cath, post-open heart surgery, post-TAVR, post-EP studies, and post-pacemaker insertion patients
- RN-to-patient ratio is typically 1:4, adjustable to 1:3 based on acuity
- 12-hour night shifts, 36 hours per week
- Every other weekend rotation required
- No on-call responsibilities
- Holiday coverage required on a rotating every-other basis
- Floating primarily to the sister General PCU unit as needed; may also float to MS/Tele or ICU for PCU-level patient care, always within or below scope of practice
- EMR: Epic (experience strongly preferred); also uses Alaris pumps and Omnicell medication dispensing
Requirements
- Active RN license issued by the South Dakota Board of Nursing, or a Compact RN license, currently in hand
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Minimum of 1.5 years of general nursing experience, with at least 1 year specific to PCU
- Experience with cardiac procedural recovery including CABG, TAVR, and post-cardiac cath patients
- Proficiency with MI pharmacology and titratable cardiac/vasoactive drips (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitroglycerin, Levophed, Dopamine) and Heparin drips
- Strong cardiac rhythm interpretation skills and chest tube management experience
- TNK administration experience preferred
- Must reside at least 100 miles from any facility within the health system
- 2 professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
- DOB and SSN required for consideration
Additional Information
- Unit support includes CNAs (ratio 1:5–8 depending on shift), an unassigned charge nurse, phlebotomy for peripheral blood draws, a tele tech who oversees cardiac monitoring (RN confirms strips at 6a and 6p), RT available 24/7, and a hospitalist in-facility 24/7
- Orientation consists of 2 partial days of education followed by 3 twelve-hour shifts on the unit
- RTO of up to 7 days is available; candidates must agree to extend the contract if taking a full week off, and no time off is permitted during the first 3 weeks of August annually
- Navy blue scrubs required
- Free parking available on-site
- First-time travelers are considered only with 2 or more years of total nursing experience
- Former permanent staff must wait a full year before returning in a travel capacity
