Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Cardiac Stepdown (Telemetry) position requiring a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience and comfort managing high-acuity cardiac patients in a fast-paced environment.
Details
- Hospital-based Cardiac Stepdown/Telemetry unit serving as the primary cardiac and stroke unit
- Patient population includes stable pre/post care for pacemaker implantation, implanted cardioverter/defibrillators (ICD), cardiac catheterization, TR bands, unstable angina, low-risk chest pain, CHF, dysrhythmias, new CVA/TIA, and post-interventional peripheral vascular procedures
- Unit manages multiple cardiac drips including Cardizem, Dopamine, and Amiodarone; nurses must be able to titrate Cardizem drips
- The unit also houses COVID-positive patients, with use of Opti-flow and BIPAP during surge periods
- Patient ratio is 1:5–6; candidates must be comfortable managing up to 6 patients
- Unit turns over 78–90 patients per week — nurses may turn over their entire patient assignment within a single shift
- A team lead is available to assist with admissions and discharges
- Schedule is 3x12-hour night shifts (18:45–07:15)
- Every other weekend is required, along with 2 Mondays and 2 Fridays within every 6-week period
- On-call is required; frequency depends on patient census
- Floating is required
- Self-scheduling is available within unit guidelines and subject to leadership oversight; block scheduling is not permitted
- EMR: Epic (Dimensions); Medication dispensing: Pyxis; Communication: SBAR
- Special equipment includes telemetry monitors, pulse oximetry, high-flow O2, non-rebreather masks, and BIPAP (chronic use only)
- Contract length is 13–26 weeks
Requirements
- Active NC RN license or compact RN license (license and certifications may be pending at time of consideration)
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience in a cardiac stepdown, telemetry, or similarly high-acuity setting
- Experience with IV insertion and telemetry monitoring required
- Experience with cardiac drips, PCI, and pre/post cardiac procedure care required
- Must pass an EKG competency test prior to start
- Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 2 years required (pending at time of consideration is acceptable)
- Must be comfortable with high patient acuity and a fast-paced, high-turnover environment
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Local candidates within 50 miles of the facility are accepted
- Former permanent, PRN, or EP employees of Novant Health or New Hanover Regional must wait 12 months before being eligible to apply as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
- Orientation is 36 hours; travelers must be available every day during the first week for hospital orientation
- Approximately 8–10 hours of pre-start modules are required and must also be completed annually
- No time off (RTO) is permitted during the first week of the assignment due to orientation; RTO requests exceeding 7 days require facility approval and cannot fall on a holiday
- Candidates must be available to work 2 out of 3 major holidays
- Scrub colors are navy blue or white (or a mix); Novant t-shirts are permitted; jackets must match uniform color and material (no fleece); no holey Crocs
- Travel pairs are accepted, but each traveler must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
- Contracts of longer than 13 weeks are available for interested candidates
