Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PCU/Telemetry position requiring a minimum of 2 years of cardiac floor experience and proficiency in telemetry monitoring, cardiac drip management, and complex cardiac/vascular patient care.

Details

  • Progressive Care Unit (PCU) in a hospital setting
  • Cardiac patient population including Afib, CHF, ACS, CAD, valvular disorders, cardiomyopathy, PVD/PAD, vasculitis, carotid stenosis, and venous stasis
  • Special procedures include CABG, AVR, MVR, TAVR, Mitral Clip, LAAO (Watchman), VATS, carotid endarterectomy, FEM-POP bypass, amputations, thoracic surgeries, post-cath, post-DCCV, post-electrophysiology, and pacemaker placements
  • Patient ratios vary by acuity: 1:4 for surgical step-down and 1:5-6 for lower acuity
  • Night shift only: 3x12-hour shifts (18:45–07:15)
  • 4 weekend shifts per 4-week period (flexible)
  • Float requirement follows unit rotation — travelers are not first to float
  • Equipment used includes Doppler, bladder scanner, EKG, femoral sheaths, TR band, Fem-stop, chest tubes, and epicardial pacing wires
  • Epic EMR used for documentation; Pyxis for medications
  • 13-week minimum contract length; extensions up to 26 weeks considered
  • Local candidates are accepted within 50 miles of the facility

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 2 years of cardiac floor experience required
  • Prior travel experience required unless the candidate has 24+ months of cardiac experience
  • Required skills: cardiac telemetry, PCU/DOU/IMC/stepdown, sheath removal, interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, post-MI care, pre/post cardiac cath, non-titrating and titrating cardiac drip management, chest tubes (Emerson/Pleuravac), external CPAP/BiPAP, nasal cannula, and non-invasive airway management
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start
  • Two professional supervisor/manager references from within the past 2 years required (pending at time of consideration is acceptable, but required before start)
  • Previously employed (perm, PRN, or EP) at Novant Health or New Hanover must wait 12 months before being eligible to apply as a traveler, with facility rehire approval required

Additional Information

  • Preferred skills include arterial line management, wound care/wound vac, and charge nurse experience
  • 24-hour unit orientation provided; weekly orientation schedule
  • 8–10 hours of pre-start online modules required (recorded via online learning, Zoom, webinar, or in-person classes), completed annually thereafter
  • Must be available for an interview; all candidates will be interviewed
  • Candidates must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • Up to 7 days of RTO may be auto-approved if not falling on a holiday; no RTO permitted during the first week of assignment due to orientation
  • Contract staff are assigned to a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team and may be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty incidents, or disasters
  • Mid-contract unit consolidation to a centralized office is possible, with reassignment to other units as needed
  • Travel pairs are allowed; each traveler must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
  • Navy scrubs required
  • First-time travelers may be considered if they have 24+ months of cardiac floor experience
