Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Labor & Delivery/Postpartum position at an acute care hospital in California, requiring a minimum of 2-3 years of L&D experience and active CA RN licensure.

Details

  • Acute care hospital L&D/Postpartum unit with 7 L&D beds, 4 triage beds, 2 overflow beds, 27 postpartum beds, and a 5-bed nursery
  • Averages approximately 3 births per day (roughly 1,545 per year)
  • Patient population includes high-risk deliveries of any gestational age, EMT drop-offs, substance abuse/withdrawal cases, patients with no prenatal care, and a large Spanish-speaking population; critically ill patients are transferred to higher-level facilities
  • Staffing ratios follow AWOHNN guidelines
  • 12-hour night shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:30 AM
  • 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule
  • On-call is optional but preferred; candidates should be prepared to discuss availability during the interview
  • L&D nurses are required to float to Postpartum and to the NICU for grower/feeder patients; Postpartum nurses float to L&D as tasks and scope allow
  • Charting via Cerner EMR; fetal monitoring via FetalLink (integrated with Cerner)
  • Fetal monitoring uses Phillips telemetry; respiratory therapy and pharmacy support available 24/7
  • OB and neonatology support available 24/7 with a 30-minute on-call response time
  • OB techs assist with C-section scrubbing, deliveries, supply stocking, and patient intake
  • Unit has 2 C-section suites with recovery; nurses are not required to scrub but must be able to circulate
  • 3-shift floor-specific orientation provided
  • 13-week assignment

Requirements

  • Active CA RN license (Standard or Compact) — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted
  • Required certifications (all must be active; pending not accepted): BLS, ACLS, NRP, and AWHONN Intermediate or Advanced Fetal Monitoring
  • S.T.A.B.L.E. certification preferred
  • Minimum 2-3 years of L&D experience required; postpartum experience required for L&D nurses
  • Ability to circulate for C-sections required (scrubbing not required)
  • At least one prior travel nursing contract preferred
  • COVID vaccination required
  • Driver's license required
  • 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire

  • Scrub color: navy
  • Holiday coverage is shared with permanent staff; travelers are typically expected to cover one major and one minor holiday
  • Candidates must not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity Health facility within the past year; candidates placed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
  • First-time travelers are not preferred; at least one prior travel contract is strongly encouraged
