Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Tele position at a Level 1 Trauma Academic Medical Center, covering a dual-unit assignment across general medicine and a locked behavioral health unit.
Details
- Work setting is a 885-bed Level 1 Trauma academic medical center and teaching hospital with a Chest Pain Center and Stroke Center
- Assignment covers two units: Unit A (General Medicine) and Unit B (locked Behavioral Health)
- Unit A patient population includes DM, GI, respiratory, renal, wounds/dressing changes, and observation patients with a goal LOS under 24 hours
- Unit B patient population includes all BH diagnoses, dementia/memory care, developmental delays, and SI
- Patient ratios: Unit A RN 1:6; Unit B RN 1:5
- Centralized telemetry monitoring is used for telemetry oversight
- Common procedures include chest tubes, trachs, PIV starts, drains and tubes, and PCA pumps
- Drip management includes Amiodarone (occasional), Fentanyl PCA, Ketamine PCA, Dilaudid PCA, and Heparin
- EMR is Epic; experience with Epic is expected
- IV pump: Alaris; medication dispensing: Omnicell
- Schedule is 12-hour day shifts (0700-1900), 36 hours per week
- Every other weekend rotation required
- Floating required to: 8 Reynolds, 8 North, ACE, 9 Ardmore, 10 Ardmore, 8 North-B, and 8 Ardmore
- No on-call or call-back requirements
Requirements
- Active NC RN license or compact RN license currently in hand
- Required certifications for Unit A: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Required certifications for Unit B: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and CPI (CPI can be obtained on site)
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience; most recent experience must be within the last year
- Med/Surg Tele unit specialty experience required
- Comfort and competency to work across both Unit A (General Medicine) and Unit B (Behavioral Health) as needed
- Experience reading and interpreting telemetry strips required
- Proficiency with chest tubes, trachs, PIV starts, drains and tubes, and PCA pump management
- Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively
- Ability to tolerate moderate to high stress levels
- Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
- Minimum 1 professional reference dated within the past year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
Additional Information
- Provide direct and indirect patient care across general medicine and behavioral health patient populations
- Department support includes CNAs, Receptionist/HUC, Charge Nurse, Phlebotomy, Rapid Response Team, RT (24/7), Hospitalist (24/7), Intensivist (24/7), and Security on Unit B (24/7)
- Mental Health Technicians (MHT) are present on Unit B 24/7
- Orientation includes new employee orientation (NEO) plus 2 days of departmental orientation
- Travelers are expected to work 75% of assigned holidays
- Royal blue scrubs required

- Unit culture is described as patient-centered, highly reliable, and team-oriented
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
- Former employees must have been separated from any AHSE facility for at least 1 year after a permanent position before being considered
