Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a 13-week ICU night shift position at a Level III Trauma facility in Council Bluffs, IA, requiring at least 2 years of ICU experience and proficiency with vents, drips, and BiPAP.

Details

  • 16-bed Medical ICU serving patients with sepsis, respiratory failure, stroke, MI, DKA, STEMI, A-fib with RVR, PE, COPD exacerbation, and COVID
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:2, occasionally stretching to 1:3
  • No nurse aides or patient care techs on the unit
  • Charge nurse is present on each shift and takes a patient assignment
  • Hospitalist available in-house 24/7; intensivist in-house during day hours and available via telemedicine at night
  • Respiratory therapy is shared with the ED and is not dedicated to the ICU
  • Centralized telemetry monitor techs are not located on the unit; nurses must be able to read and verify their own strips
  • Telemetry monitors are Dräger brand
  • Charting is done in Epic
  • 12-hour night shifts, 6:30 PM – 7:00 AM
  • Every third weekend required
  • Holiday coverage required for the 4th of July
  • No on-call or standby requirement
  • Floating required to lower levels of care including PCU and Med-Surg; training is provided
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active IA RN license or Compact (NLC) RN license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU experience required; previous travel nursing experience preferred
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS — all must be active; pending certifications not accepted
  • Preferred certifications: PALS and TNCC
  • Proficiency with mechanical ventilators, BiPAP, and high-flow oxygen required
  • Experience titrating drips required, including vasopressors and sedation agents (e.g., levophed, neosynephrine, cardene, precedex, propofol)
  • Ability to read and verify cardiac monitor strips required
  • Driver's license required for consideration (used to verify residential address)

Additional Information

  • Candidate must reside more than 50 miles from the facility; a driver's license is used to verify permanent address
  • Candidates who have been directly employed full-time, part-time, or PRN by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity Health facility within the past year are not eligible; candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
  • A pass/fail open-book skills exam is administered on the first Friday of orientation — a score of 90% or higher is required to pass; failure may result in contract termination
  • Orientation consists of 1 shift on the ICU and 1 shift on the PCU
  • Navy blue scrubs are required
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to remove them may result to contract termination
  • 2 professional references are required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
  • All RTO requests must be submitted upfront; additional RTO will not be approved after consideration
  • Self-scheduling is not available; block scheduling cannot be guaranteed — scheduling is based on unit need

I couldn’t have asked for a better experience for my first travel assignment. American Traveler has made the entire process feel easy from start to finish.
