Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Telemetry/Direct Observation Unit (2N) night shift position requiring cardiac monitoring skills including strip reading and experience with set-rate drip management.

Details

  • 21-bed Medical/Surgical and Cardiac Observation unit in an acute care hospital setting
  • Common diagnoses include pre/post cath, chest pain rule-outs on heparin drips, COPD, CHF, pacers, and arrhythmias, as well as general MedSurg diagnoses
  • Average nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6
  • Telemetry monitor techs are located on a separate floor, but RNs are responsible for reading and interpreting cardiac strips; a real-time monitor is also available on the unit
  • Set-rate drips include Cardizem and Amiodarone; occasional drips include Bumex and Lasix — drip titration is not required
  • Respiratory support limited to BiPAP and CPAP for supportive therapy only; high-flow oxygen is not used on this unit
  • Nurse aides are available on the unit (ratio 1:10, occasionally higher depending on census) and handle EKGs, bladder scans, fingerstick blood sugars, ADLs, and vitals
  • Charge nurse coverage is available 24/7; night charge nurses carry a patient assignment
  • 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a)
  • Every-other-weekend requirement for travelers; night weekend shifts fall on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
  • Epic EMR is used in this position
  • Travelers are typically the first to float and may be sent to any unit in the hospital, including ICU and Stepdown, but will only receive patients within their skillset

Requirements

  • Active WV RN license or a compact RN license currently in hand or in process
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications (AHA)
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • Ability to read and interpret cardiac rhythm strips is required
  • Experience with set-rate Cardizem and Amiodarone required
  • Experience with TR Bands is strongly preferred
  • A valid, unexpired driver's license is required for consideration

Additional Information

  • This is a fast-paced, high-volume unit with up to 6 discharges and 6+ admissions per day
  • Orientation consists of 1 day of computer/Epic training followed by 1 day of floor shadowing with a preceptor
  • Royal blue scrubs are required; scrub jackets are optional but must be actual scrub jackets — hoodies and sweat jackets are not permitted
  • Holiday coverage may be required based on unit needs
  • All time-off requests must be submitted upfront and included in the contract; requests made after contract start require facility approval
  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from this WVU facility to be eligible for a travel assignment
  • Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before returning; cumulative time worked within the WVU system may not exceed one year before a 2-year break is required
  • 13-week contract
